About Chris
Aiken Drum Academy was started in 2018. My name is Chris Aiken the owner and teacher for this company. I have over 25 years of experience playing drums and percussion. In my younger years I took lessons from Walter Salb who was a well known jazz drummer who has taught many of the greats. He has taught Allison Miller who played with Natalie Merchant, Ani Difranco and currently has her own band Boom tic boom. Some others are Jean paul who plays drums for clutch and also chris coulis who plays with OAR. I went on to play with jazz bands, metal and rock fusion bands. My biggest passion is to teach rock, jazz, snare drum, hand drums and other percussion. I do teach similar things I was taught because it has proven to work very well. With me you will learn music theory, reading music and develop skills to help make the student the best they can be. As long as they practice. Practice is one of the most important things to progress. I dont believe in teaching a certain style of music but to teach students all the tools they need to play whatever style they desire. Currently I offer private lessons at students homes. By summer 2019 I should have my own home studio so I can teach privately there as well. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
I enjoy teaching students how to play drums and see how much they progress each week. I have had a few students who never played before and now are in rock bands performing with a year or less of lessons. It's great to see someone gain abilities that they didn't think they could do at first.
Passion. Being able to teach my knowledge to others so they can progress to be great.
I have over 25 years experience playing drums and percussion. For the past 5 years I have been teaching at music stores/schools. I was taught many different styles with a focus on jazz. I was an A student in school for music and was in all honors band courses.

Every student is different. Some have a natural ability to grasp things quickly and others take more time. I quickly get them behind the set and see what they can do and understand. With students who have played before I look to see where we need to start and see if anything needs to be corrected.
I have worked with students of all ages. My current students range from 9 to 45 years old. I currently teach two autistic children who are teenagers as well.
Make sure you are comfortable with the teacher. If you don't like them or feel they are not very knowledgeable then look for someone who is. Teaching/learning should be fun but as a student you have to put in the work. Practicing as much as you can and showing you are progressing each week will make the the process more enjoyable.
