The first thing is to find out about the students learning objectives. For example, if the objective is to pass a test, we can focus on just the topics covered in the test and techniques useful for getting the highest mark possible. If, as another example, the learner wants to be able to have casual or formal conversations with speakers of Mandarin Chinese, we will focus on common phrases and key elements to listening and speaking tones correctly, to start with.
Once the learning objectives are clear, we look to understand how much time the student plans to spend learning and what their deadlines (if any) are.
After an initial assessment of the learners knowledge and ability to use the language at the start, specialized lesson plans will be created. This will help to ensure the learner gets the most out of each lesson as well as making sure every opportunity is met to stick to the timeline for the learning objectives.
Students i have taught have been of various ages. Some with careers and others still in school. Some were more advanced in their language ability and others needed to start with the basics.
Find a teacher that not only gives good instruction but also encourages and listens to you.
In the past few years, I have been encouraging some of my more "traditional" friends to learn a second language. A recent phone conversation with one of them, in which they demonstrated having correctly learned to use certain words from their second language in the correct context, was both enjoyable and memorable for me.
