About Edward
I am a recent college graduate (Yale Class of 2018) who remembers clearly what it is like to be in school -- the challenges, pressures, and enjoyments, too. I have experience in creative teaching exercises: while textbook, test-geared learning can be effective in some cases, I also work to make language-learning practical, memorable, and fun through outside-the-box exercises like poetry, games, performance, and candid conversation.
I have a degree in China Studies (with a focus on contemporary literature, politics, and economics) from Yale University. I am a playwright and filmmaker by profession. My teaching experience includes leading language classes in Chinese high schools in Yunnan, China, and leading playwriting and theater workshops through the Eugene O'Neill Program in New Haven, Connecticut. I also trained as a world-class athlete (squash), competed at a high level, and have worked with students in athletic training. These experiences have instilled in me a belief that all learning should be disciplined, active, and engaging.
Teaching is an opportunity to connect with bright young people and learn together. I enjoy guiding students and discovering new approaches, rather than hand-feeding them information.
