About Casey
As a research scientist, my understanding of the basic sciences comes from firsthand experience. In this sense, I have a unique way of explaining complex subjects and systems, and I love sharing my passion for science with others. I first began tutoring through a program called Boston Scholar Athletes, an after-school program for student athletes at Fenway High School. As a student-athlete myself, I knew the difficulty of balancing schoolwork with athletics and the tremendous pressure that many of these athletes are under. After this experience, as a way of both helping others and maintaining my own knowledge through teaching, I asked the permission of my Simmons professors to tutor their courses. This included private and group tutoring as well as laboratory teaching assistance. At the end of my Simmons career, I tutored in biological psychology, calculus, statistics, organic chemistry and physics.
In my second year at Simmons, I applied for a first year seminar facilitator position because my seminar and facilitator were very useful for me in my first year. For many, the first year of college is their first time being away from home. It is filled with the challenges of independent living on top of coursework that may feel unfamiliar. As a facilitator, I was lucky to act as a mentor for these students and present information at a weekly course regarding college issues such as balancing finances and coursework, as well as how to get around the city safely. Additionally, I aimed to highlight difficult discussions of race, diversity, and inclusion within Simmons and the greater community. I also designed unique assignments which I had the opportunity to grade and provide feedback. Additionally, I have taught tennis to children ages 4 to 14 for a number of years as a certified tennis teacher.
As I mentioned previously, I currently work as a researcher in a neurobiology lab at Boston Children's Hospital. I will be attending medical school in Puerto Rico this coming fall and hope to become a physician.
I do something different nearly every day—this is what I like most about my job because it gives me flexibility, allows me to problem solve, and often, challenges me. I also have the opportunity to mentor budding scientists in the lab, amongst my own experiments. I love this part of my job because I am able to empower the next generation of scientists and teach them both tenacity and skills they need to continue in research.
Another favorite part of my job is the people that I work with. In my lab, I have some of the most wonderful individuals that help me grow each day. The mission of the hospital as a whole is emanated in all the people who work here. I'm very grateful to be surrounded by that kind of positivity and intellect each day.
