About Anne-Marie
My role as an educator is to give students the tools they need to succeed while also instilling an insatiable thirst for knowledge. My approach to teaching has been influenced by the diversity of experiences I have had both as an instructor and as a research scientist. My goal is to prepare students for challenges they meet in the classroom as well as in their future career paths.
I have both a B.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry. Since undergrad, I have acquired 16 years of teaching, learning, and research experience with chemistry. Not only am I passionate about chemistry and science in general, I have a passion for teaching and helping others understand the incredibly interesting world of chemistry!
Overall, I am an open-minded and patient instructor. My unique experiences in chemistry have exposed me to different teaching styles and in effect, made me a more well-rounded instructor. I help students relate to the material by presenting examples of how certain concepts are used in the real world, which I believe improves memory and learning comprehension.
I thoroughly enjoy helping people understand difficult concepts in chemistry. The best feeling is when you see your student have that "aha" moment. I take pride in inspiring my students to appreciate chemistry and realize how much it applies to our lives on a daily basis. I also enjoy when my students have successes, whether that is a good grade on a test or moving on to the next topic because they grasped the last one.
The first experience I had with teaching occurred in high school when I took a part time job at a local music store to teach music lessons to aspiring violinists and violists. The most challenging part of teaching music was keeping the younger students focused, but I kept them engaged by having us play duets. These moments where we created music together was the most rewarding part of this experience, both for the students and me, where it motivated them to work harder and develop an appreciation for music.
