About Joe
I have four decades experience acting and directing Shakespeare. I have performed for the North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Kenucky and Wisconsin Shakespeare Festivals. I have also worked for the Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern and spend a year on tour with the Shenendoah Shakespeare Express. I hold a PhD in English and an MFA in Theatre and am an Associate Professor of English at Texas State. I can help students prepare for educational or professional Shakespeare auditions.
I have a PhD in Renaissance Literature from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an MFA in Performance from Roosevelt University in Chicago. I am the author of "Reiminagining Shakespeare's Playhouse" (Boydell and Brewer, 2010) as well as many articles including “Auditioning for Shakespeare.” in PERFORM: Succeeding as a Creative Professional. Ed. Anna Weinstein. New York: Focal Press, 2017. 29-38.

First we identify one or more Shakespearean monologues appropriate for the student's type. I will edit these for length, if needed, and print the student a hard copy of each edited piece. I will then explain the process of paraphrase and text analysis which I expect the student to do for our next meeting. After reviewing the paraphrase and text analysis, I explain the "beat/verb" exercise and ask the student to prepare this for our next meeting. After reviewing beats and verbs at the following meeting, the student is ready to memorize the piece. We will then work one or more sessions off book, in which we stage the monologue. This process then repeats for each piece the student wants to learn.
