• Are you fluent in this language because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn it?

  I developed my fluency in the Korean language due to my profound love for Korean pop culture, specifically K-pop and K-dramas. It started as a result of my passion for learning languages and music. I discovered the Korean language for the first time through Korean drama in 2000. My fascination with Korean culture ignited my desire to understand the intricacies of the language. My motivation comes from the joy of deciphering Korean lyrics and appreciating the nuances of Korean dramas on a whole new level.

• Name the living, historical or fictional character who, in your opinion, is the emblematic representative of the culture in question!

  For me, King Sejong is the most admirable person when I think about Korea. King Sejong stands as the iconic embodiment of Korean culture. His unwavering dedication to advancing the Korean people's knowledge and fostering inclusivity through language is nothing short of awe-inspiring. He is the creator of Hangul, the Korean script. His vision went far beyond mere linguistic innovation. It was a profound act of cultural empowerment. He recognized that language was not just a means of communication but also a powerful tool for preserving and celebrating the essence of Korean identity. Through the creation of Hangul, King Sejong democratized knowledge, making it accessible to all Koreans, regardless of their social status or educational background.   One facet of Korean culture is the phrase "빨리 빨리 (pali pal)" which translates to 'hurry up' or 'quickly' in English. This cultural expression encapsulates the essence of Korean society in a way that never fails to amuse and inspire me.
  
  The concept of 'pali pali' extends beyond its literal meaning: it reflects the Korean people's work ethic and determination to seize every opportunity. It has instilled in me a profound appreciation for the relentless drive and diligence that characterize Korean society.

  The Korean language has its unique challenges and rewards. One of the main difficulties in learning Korean is the depth of the language. It's like an ocean. The more you explore, the more you realize there's always more to learn. The Korean language has layers of honorifics, nuanced grammar structures, and a rich vocabulary that can be both daunting and exhilarating.
  
  However, what makes learning Korean truly exciting is the sheer abundance of resources and cultural immersion opportunities it offers. Korean culture is interwoven with its language in a way that few others are. From K-pop and K-dramas to reality shows, movies, and music, every aspect of Korean media contributes to a rich and engaging language-learning experience.
  
  The Korean entertainment industry has a unique talent for making learning not just educational but also entertaining. Thanks to that, I passed the Korean TOPIK level 6 exam in just one year. This is my new record of mastering a new language in just one year.

They are more than willing to help, teach, and engage in conversations, which creates a supportive and encouraging environment for language learners.

• Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your job or schooling?

  One memorable day in my role as a Korean language teacher, I had the pleasure of teaching a diverse group of students from around the world. The classroom was filled with enthusiasm as I introduced them to Korean culture and language.
  
  As the lessons progressed, I noticed one student, who was reserved and struggled with pronunciation. She had a dream of visiting South Korea someday but she was feeling discouraged by the complexities of the language.
  
  To overcome her challenges, I decided to incorporate a unique teaching method. I brought in a collection of her favorite group BTS songs, picked her favorite song, and deciphered the meaning of the lyrics. I encouraged the class to sing along. To my surprise, she was so happy and sang the loudest to her favorite song. Her pronunciation improved significantly as she sang along. The classroom transformed into a mini K-pop concert. Her confidence in speaking Korean grew, and her dream of visiting South Korea began to feel more attainable. It was a heartwarming moment for me as a teacher to witness her transformation.
  
  This anecdote reminds me of the power of creativity and the importance of making language learning a fun and enjoyable experience. It's a testament to the idea that language is not just about grammar and vocabulary but also about connecting with the heart and soul of a culture.

  Traveling has always held a special place in my heart. For me, it's not just a hobby. It's a profound way to connect with the world and gain a deeper understanding of diverse cultures, histories, and people.
  
  One of the aspects of travel that I cherish the most is the chance to immerse myself in different cultures. Whether it's tasting the local cuisine in a bustling market in Seoul, exploring the ancient temples of Kyoto, or wandering the vibrant streets of Paris, every culture I encounter leaves unforgettable memories in my heart.
