About Coach
As a young boy, I suffered with chronic asthma, meaning I was not healthy enough to take part in sports like my friends did, no football, rugby, cricket I would get out of breath and have an asthma attack then get taken to hospital, I spent a lot of time in hospitals, I was like a resident. In my early teens as my lungs grew stronger, I started doing boxing and Judo, I took a liking to boxing which gave me a lot of confidence. My love for combat sports, took me to kung fu which I learned a few different forms, never completing to get a black belt, but learning the art and developing discipline and skills. After a dangerous encounter with a group of guys at a gas station after a night out at a club, my skills were put to the test and failed because I was under the influence of alcohol, I mean, I was heavily intoxicated so badly I couldn't hold my hands up to throw a punch, so I took a few punches in the face. This is a lesson that was a catalyst of change, as in reflection, I was lucky to have got out with a few bruises to the face. That night taught me some valuable life lessons. Reality-based self defense eventually became a major part of my life as did fitness, not to mention giving up alcohol. I have been studying real-world self defense for 15 years, teaching for 12 years and what I know now I have taught to many. My way of giving back to humanity is to help others be safe, confident and able to deal with bullies and predators.

Every student as an individual is different in life experiences, fitness, weight, size, personality, character and so on. I look for the areas where the weakness lies and tap into it, developing every area to ensure the mechanics of the techniques are effective when applied. The training is hard as I really push students out of their comfort zones. The lessons start with a warm-up, some awareness drills, striking drills or reflex drills depending on how I feel. Second portion of the class is to learn techniques from the Level 1 syllabus, where the students pair up and work through scenarios where the techniques can be applied. Last section of the class, is the pressure test, where the students will be approached by other students continuously to put the techniques from the lesson to work, it is hard but good energy, get a good adrenaline rush. We cool down and stretch to end the class. I take care of my students, they come to me to learn and I teach to the best of my ability, they are like my own family and I treat the class as one family, everyone looks out for each other, we are all there to learn, no egos allowed. After continuous and consistent training, when I see a student is ready for a grading, I will let them know to start preparing. The Level 1 syllabus will equip anyone with the skills and mindset to handle most people and situations.
