About JJ

I am JJ Kim, a third-year student at Duke University. I am currently teaching SAT preparation for college entrance exams, with a focus on reading and writing sections. I worked as an SAT lecturer for two years in two different Korean SAT academies (PULSE edu. and AESF) and tutored for three years either in person or online. Throughout my teaching, I have raised the scores of over 25 students, and I’ve been in contact with them ever since they got accepted into prestigious U.S. universities. I find and create the class materials myself. I've read a lot of practice test books and released study guides while teaching for 5 years, and I've selectively organized the important and must-memorize features into lists for students to study and memorize. Most of my students were able to bump up their scores by at least 110 points after consistent practice and tutoring sessions with me. The tutoring sessions are conducted in a way that allows students to be constantly active and immersed in their learning; students are expected to consistently explain the answer choices that they’ve marked and answer questions that I raise throughout the session. My philosophy is that regardless of how good the teaching material/content/technique is, if the class isn’t fun for the student, then it is completely futile for their learning. Even if it's a test preparation class, I try my best to make them incredibly immersive and active to allow the students to be concentrated and genuinely interested at all times. Please let me know if you have any other questions. My lesson plans, teaching methods, and specialties are all written on my profile page. Thank you, so much!

Teaching Methods:
- Work with vocabulary lists that aren't merely composed of words+definitions, but also synonyms, antonyms, commonly confused words, and prefixes+suffixes (incredibly helpful for word-in-context questions)
- Give a complete and exemplary demonstration of how you're supposed to annotate the passage while analyzing the content and figuring out key information multiple times (helps with reading comprehension under time pressure)
- Focus heavily on previously incorrect questions to prevent future silly mistakes
- Memorize all of the SAT test makers' tactics (allows students to see which answer choices are obviously incorrect based on a few clues from wording or phrasing)
Lesson plan:
- All practice tests/questions should be completed as homework; reviewing incorrect questions will take up the first half of the class
- The second half of the class is composed of intensive vocabulary lectures; we will be going over each word to know when it is used (positive and negative connotations), and its related words (synonyms, antonyms, etc).
- Vocabulary tests every session: allows students to not only test their knowledge in definitions but also related words.
Key differences in lessons:
- All vocabulary lists are handmade; only the most important and must-memorize words were selectively added, along with their related words.
- Students make a notebook that contains all the questions that they've gotten incorrect during practice -> serves as a useful learning tool for reviewing their mistakes
- Ensure the students are aware of the different types of questions that are asked in the exam, along with the rules that the SAT test-makers utilize -> allows students to immediately know what the test-makers are asking for when they go across any question
- Solve passages of particular themes that they struggle with; I have compiled a collection of passages that are all included under a particular theme (literature/historical exposition/speech/scientific article/social sciences)
- I do not use released answer keys for explanations because they don't always offer a clear explanation for each answer choice. I always solve the exam beforehand so I am aware of why each answer choice is either correct or incorrect.
For middle schoolers/SAT starters:
- I give a demonstration of solving an SAT passage by directly solving a few passages in front of them so students have a clear idea of what to look for and what not to look for while solving questions
- Students during class must solve some passages while explaining every action they take; why they've underlined that line, why they've annotated a particular paragraph, and why they've either circled or crossed out answer choices in a question
For high schoolers/people with previous SAT experience:
- Marathon of practice tests and previous exams that were released to see the general trend of their test-taking habits (allows both the student and I to see which passages and question types they particularly struggle with)
