About Hermann
I am Fan Hermann Xiao, a dedicated Curtin University STEM student with a strong passion for teaching. I have always enjoyed helping peers and younger students understand complex concepts in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Growing up bilingual in English and Mandarin Chinese, I understand the challenges of learning and can connect with students from diverse backgrounds. My goal as a tutor is to make learning engaging and accessible for every student.

My son was falling behind in Year 8 maths — negative numbers and algebra had him completely lost. I tried three different tutors before finding Hermann. He took the time to find WHERE the gaps were (turned out it was Year 5 fractions!), systematically rebuilt his foundations over 8 weeks. End of term, he went from 45% to 72%. What sets Hermann apart: he doesn't just teach formulas, he diagnoses why the student is stuck in the first place. As a parent, that's exactly what I needed. Highly recommend him.
My son started the term using ChatGPT for all his maths homework. 90% correct every time - but when I quizzed him at home, he couldn't explain a single step. The AI was giving him answers, not understanding. Hermann spotted this in the very first lesson: he made my son solve at the whiteboard and talk through his reasoning out loud. The gaps were obvious within 5 minutes. Three weeks later, his end-of-term exam went from a borderline C to a solid B+, and more importantly, my son now tells me he actually feels proud when he solves something himself instead of just copying an answer. That's the difference between a tutor and a real teacher.

Hermann spotted this in the first lesson: he made my son solve at the whiteboard and talk through his reasoning out loud. The gaps were obvious within 5 minutes. Three weeks later, his end-of-term exam went from a C+ to an A-. Not from endless drill sheets — from Hermann forcing him to think like a person again. He told me something I'll never forget: "AI can give the right answer. It can't tell you where your child's understanding stops."
Contacted Hermann in March because my daughter (Year 9) was in complete meltdown over science. Failed first chem test, convinced she was "just bad at science." Her teacher at school has 30 kids to manage and she'd basically given up on her.
Hermann sat down with her and within the first hour identified that the core issue wasn't chemistry at all — she'd never properly understood the metric system and unit conversions. No wonder every calculation was wrong. He went back to basics, built her up from there.
Four months later she's getting Bs in science and — this is the best part — she voluntarily chose science electives for Year 10. She actually said "science is kind of interesting now." From tears at the kitchen table to that, in one term.
He's not one of those tutors who talks down to kids or acts like they're stupid for not getting it. Very calm, explains things like a normal human, and genuinely wants them to understand. Can't recommend enough.
I'm a Curtin student in the same STEM cohort and I've seen Hermann tutor a bunch of high school kids at the library. At first I thought he was just helping friends' siblings, but it's way more organised than that.
One session I was sitting nearby — he had a Year 12 student doing Physics, and they were working through an ATAR projectile motion question. The kid was stuck on resolving vectors and you could see she was about to give up. Hermann didn't just tell her the answer — he pulled up a slow-motion video of a soccer ball being kicked, overlaid the vectors on screen, and walked her through it frame by frame. Took 10 minutes but you could literally see it click.
He doesn't just "know the content" — he genuinely enjoys explaining stuff in different ways until it sticks. I've referred two family friends to him since and both have stuck with him long-term. Good bloke, knows his stuff, actually cares.
Hermann started tutoring my son for Year 11 Maths Methods midway through Term 2 — and I'll be honest, I was skeptical about booking a uni student. Previous year we wasted $600 on a "qualified teacher" who just handed over worksheets and scrolled her phone.
Difference was obvious after the first session. My son came out and said "Mum, he actually explained WHY the chain rule works." He'd been memorising steps all term without understanding the logic. Hermann drew it out on scratch paper, showed him the visual, then made him explain it back. Proper teaching.
End of term report came back — went from a C to a B+. But honestly the bigger win is my son doesn't dread maths anymore. That's worth more than the grade.
Hermann's patient, turns up on time, and actually answers questions properly instead of just saying "do more practice questions." Recommend without hesitation.
