About Faridah (Professional Tutor)

“You make AP Chemistry seem so easy.”

That’s one of the things I hear most often from students and parents who come to me after chemistry has already started feeling overwhelming.

I’m a chemistry educator and tutor specializing in AP Chemistry and Honors Chemistry, and I’ve worked with 500+ students. I’ve been tutoring chemistry full-time for the past 7 years, after first tutoring while I was in dental school and later working as a dentist.

What makes my approach different is that I don’t want students memorizing a long list of formulas and hoping they remember which one to use on the test.

I want them to understand what is actually happening.

When a student understands the “why,” the calculations, equations, graphs, and AP-style questions become much easier to work through.

I use simple explanations, real-life connections, analogies, visuals, and lots of guided practice to turn complicated chemistry into something students can actually follow.

AP Chemistry

AP Chemistry requires much more than memorizing content. Students need to understand concepts, apply them to unfamiliar situations, interpret experiments and data, and explain their reasoning.

In our sessions, we can work on:

• Understanding AP Chemistry concepts from the ground up
• School tests and quizzes
• AP-style multiple-choice questions
• FRQs and how to approach them step by step
• Calculations and problem-solving
• Labs, experimental design, and data analysis
• Finding and fixing gaps in previous units
• Building confidence before the AP exam

Whether your child is struggling to keep up with their AP class, has gaps in their chemistry foundation, or is aiming for a 4 or 5 on the AP exam, I can meet them where they are and build from there.

Honors Chemistry

Honors Chemistry is where students build the foundation that everything else depends on.

I help students actually understand topics such as:

• Atomic structure and periodic trends
• Chemical bonding and Lewis structures
• Naming and chemical reactions
• Mole calculations and stoichiometry
• Gas laws
• Thermochemistry
• Acids and bases
• Equilibrium
• Electrochemistry
• And the specific topics covered in their school curriculum

If your child is saying, “I understand it when someone explains it, but I can't do the questions by myself,” that is exactly the kind of gap I work on.

We don't just go through the homework and move on. I want students to understand how to recognize the type of problem, what information matters, why they are using a particular approach, and how to get to the answer themselves.

What I focus on

Understanding over memorization.
Reasoning over guessing.
Confidence over simply getting through homework.

I also believe students need to feel comfortable saying, “I don't understand this.”

There is no point pretending to understand something in chemistry because the next few topics usually build on it. I identify where the confusion started, fill that gap, and then build forward.

I've worked with students who came to me after trying other tutors and still felt that chemistry was impossible. Seeing that moment when something finally clicks is one of my favorite parts of tutoring.

If your child is struggling with AP Chemistry or Honors Chemistry, send me a message and tell me what they're currently studying, what they're struggling with, and what they want to achieve.

I'll help you figure out the best way to move forward.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been tutoring in Chemistry since the last 7 years. I started when I was in high school. Chemistry has always been my favourite since the first day. A few of my friends found Chemistry intimidating and had hard time with understanding the concept. So, I decided to hẹlp and tutor them. As a result, we passed Chemistry with good grades together.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My favourite subject to teach is Chemistry, even though I also do teach other subjects such as Math and Biology. There are so many interesting topics in Chemistry like Stochiometry, Limiting reagent, Redox reaction, acids and bases. I really like to teach all these topics because they are more conceptual and logic base rather than factual. So I get to explain to the students in a way that makes sense. Rather than telling the students, it is what it is.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Unfortunately, I never have any good chemistry teacher for which I decided to become a tutor to help the students that need support in Chemistry.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor, one should have the ability to break down hard concept in a simple way. The responsibility of a tutor is to make sure the student know the best way to learn the material in an efficient way.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I was tutoring one of my student in stochiometry, and she had been having trouble with identifying the limiting reagent. It would took 10 minutes just to identify limiting reagent. So, I came up a with a trick of making tables and organising everything. Using the trick she was able to solve the questions in less than 2 minutes. She was so happy and gain confidence in Chemistry. She passed the class with an A-!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The biggest challenge that I faced in tutoring Chemistry was to explain the geometry of molecules. Since it is in 3 dimensionsal it was hard to show it to the students in 2 dimensional screen. I then discovered some app that allowed me to draw the molecules in 3D which make it easier for me to show and explain it to my students.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion has always been teaching. Whether teaching a material to others or to myself😅. I like to learn a new materials and explain it to others. Because of this trait that I have I am able to teach variety of subjects.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :P)?

Probably the success rate? I have been teaching more than 300 students and I am glad to say that 98% of them passed their class and 70% of them got an A. Does that make me a Superprof? It's you to decide after a demo session with me. Thank you for reading my interview, I hope you will give me a chance to change the course of your Chemistry life😅. Have a good day!
