About Jason
I’m Jason, and I tend to work well with singers who say things like, “I know I can sing this because sometimes it comes out perfectly.” That sentence interests me. If something works occasionally, there is usually a coordination behind the successful version. Our job is to identify it and make it repeatable.
I prefer experiments over vague instructions. Instead of telling you to “support more,” we can alter one part of the phrase and listen to what actually happens. Instead of telling you to “place the sound forward,” we can try a specific exercise and see whether it improves the note we are working on. I want every exercise to answer a question.
I also do not want you to become dependent on warm-ups that sound great but have no connection to your songs. If an exercise makes your voice feel easier, the next step is immediately transferring that feeling into the lyric that was giving you trouble. Otherwise, we have only become good at the exercise.
This approach is particularly suited to singers who enjoy understanding cause and effect. If you want to know why one version of a note feels easy and another feels forced—and you want a method for finding the easier version again—we will have plenty to work with.
Reference note — not part of the ad copy: I used the PDF’s recurring concepts of targeted technical work, structured practice, practical musicianship, individualized problem-solving, and connecting technique to repertoire as the conceptual basis, while deliberately creating different methods and language for Jason. The source emphasizes structured violin work in rhythm, intonation, bow control, and individualized technique; practical guitar work in fretboard understanding, rhythm, voicings, improvisation, and applied theory; piano lessons combining technique, repertoire, and creative work; and vocal lessons addressing breath, pitch, range, vocal coordination, and repertoire.

If the opening verse of a song feels comfortable but the chorus suddenly turns into a completely different voice—louder, tighter, breathier, or less predictable—I want to work on the transition rather than treating the chorus as an isolated problem. We may begin with the melody on a gentle hum or lip trill, moving through the difficult section without the full lyric. This removes some of the variables and lets us hear whether the pitch and coordination can stay consistent before consonants, vowels, and performance intensity are added back in.
Then we rebuild the lyric carefully. Certain vowels may become much wider as you sing higher, and certain consonants may cause you to press harder than you realize. We can sing the same phrase several times while changing only one element at a time. Perhaps the first version is on a hum, the second uses only the vowels, and the third restores the complete words. If the phrase suddenly becomes difficult at one stage, we have learned something specific about what is interfering with it.
For pitch accuracy, we may use target-note training. Instead of singing an entire phrase and only noticing afterward that one note went flat, we isolate the destination note and approach it from several directions. Then we place it back inside a two-note interval, then a three-note fragment, then the original phrase. This is particularly useful for singers who are generally musical but have two or three notes in a song that behave unpredictably.
We will also explore intensity without assuming that “more emotion” requires more force. I may ask you to sing the same line at three different levels—very conversational, medium intensity, and full performance energy—while trying to keep the pitch and basic tone equally stable. If the high note only works when you sing loudly, that gives us useful information. If it actually becomes easier at medium intensity, that gives us different information. The goal is to give you choices instead of having the song decide what your voice has to do.

Jason worked with me on my macroeconomics course, specifically inflation and monetary policy, where I could define terms fine but couldn't connect why the Fed would actually raise rates in a given scenario. He'd give me a news headline and make me guess the policy response before we opened the textbook. My guesses were off constantly for the first few weeks. Eventually the reasoning started coming to me first instead of the vocabulary. He also fixed a mixed-up graph on an old homework set without turning it into a lecture.
Jason helped me get through my intro psych stats unit, mostly hypothesis testing, where I could pick the right test if you told me which one but froze completely when starting from scratch. He'd make me explain what result would actually surprise me before touching any formula. I kept mixing up null and alternative for way longer than I'd like. It took a good chunk of the term to feel automatic. He also cleared up a p-value question I'd flubbed on a quiz over text.
