About CJ
Hello! My name is CJ, and I’m a STEM nerd with a poet’s heart. I received my BA from Oberlin College in 2018 with a Biology Major and Geology/Creative Writing minors. I thrive at the intersection of art and science, which has led me to a diverse array of experiences. I’ve conducted scientific research, designed and taught classes, led environmental activism campaigns, and published both fiction and non-fiction. I recently returned from a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, where I spent 12 months traveling the world to learn about the conservation of culturally-significant wildlife. I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring in STEM and the humanities, and I also speak fluent Spanish and basic Japanese. I’m always looking to meet new people and try new experiences, and I can’t wait to see where I end up next.

My approach is to give students the space they need to make their own discoveries. Learning happens when a students makes a mistake and learns from it, not when they listen to a lecture or watch a tutorial. I will never just explain why the answer is wrong. Rather, I let my students walk me through a problem so that I can understand their thought process. Sometimes, just speaking their ideas aloud is enough to help them realize their error. Patience is absolutely essential to making this work, which is why I make sure to never lose patience with my students. Through my tutoring, I strive to emulate the best teachers I've had, all of whom were masters at giving students the space and support they needed to learn and grow independently.
