About Stew
I began teaching after several years’ experience working in the charity sector and, later, as a freelance writer. I trained during the COVID pandemic, so I was an early adopter of online teaching because of the lockdowns, and I found this to be particularly useful in engaging students who experienced anxiety in a mainstream school setting. I have done supply teaching at special schools, where I developed experience in small group and 1:1 settings with students who had a range of social, emotional and mental health needs. I also have four years’ experience of teaching international students online. My approach is non-judgemental and inclusive, so students can feel completely safe to ask questions and share their worries about the course or the exams.

Tailored tuition to the individual student begins with finding out which aspects of the course the student finds particularly challenging, then providing a pathway to ensure that the student becomes confident in those aspects. My focus is on understanding key terms, definitions, and concepts. I ask questions to guide the student towards mastering these so that they can feel confident and secure in their knowledge. I also work with the student to improve their note-taking and revision strategies, with a focus on deconstructing exam questions of all kinds (MCQs, recall, short response, 6-mark and longer) with the student so that they can develop strong exam technique in preparation for those crucial exams.
Lessons are usually 50 minutes, but may be shorter or longer by arrangement. Some students work well over longer periods, whereas others find shorter sessions more productive. My tutoring is tailored to individual needs. What matters is that the student makes progress, so whether the focus is on the difference between an 8 and a 9 or a pass and a fail, I will create a workable plan with the student and implement it.
Qualifications: PGCE & QTS. BSc in Psychology.
Experience: Six years’ secondary school teaching of Biology (A-level and GCSE) and Combined Science, four of which were at an online international school, during which I taught Pearson Edexcel International A-level and GCSE Biology and GCSE Combined Science. I have also worked in special schools, which has given me experience in working with neurodivergent students and those experiencing anxiety and difficulty coping with mainstream educational settings.
My lessons are for Year 10 & 11 students who are studying GCSE Biology and Combined Science, and Year 12 & 13 students who are studying A-level Biology.
