About Harrison

I've played piano my whole life and have been producing and performing electronic music for years under my project Tokyo Rat, releasing music and playing shows with it.

I teach beginner-friendly piano and synthesizer lessons, covering the fundamentals of playing, plus how synths actually work: sound design, basic production, and how to start turning what you play into tracks. Whether you want to learn piano from scratch or get comfortable on a synth, I'll meet you where you're at.

Session 1 — Orientation & First Sounds

Objectives: Get comfortable at the instrument, set goals, play first notes.

Quick intro conversation: what drew them to piano/synth, any prior experience, what they want to be able to do in 8 weeks
Posture, hand position, finger numbering
Locate C on the keyboard, play a 5-finger C position (C-D-E-F-G)
Quick synth tour: what's an oscillator, filter, envelope, in plain language, no jargon dump
Homework: 5 min/day of 5-finger position, both hands separately
Session 2 — Reading the Keyboard, Not Just Notation

Objectives: Navigate the full keyboard by pattern, not memorization.

Black key groupings (2s and 3s) as landmarks
All 12 note names around the octave
Basic rhythm: quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, clap-and-count
Play a simple 1-octave C major scale, hands separately
Homework: scale hands separately, name notes on sight for 5 min
Session 3 — Chords & Basic Theory

Objectives: Understand what a chord is and build the first three.

Major triad formula (root-3rd-5th), build C, F, G
Play a simple I-IV-V progression, one hand chords, other hand nothing yet
Ear training: major vs. minor sound, 5 min
Homework: cycle through C-F-G until it's automatic
Session 4 — Putting Melody Over Chords

Objectives: Combine both hands, play something that sounds like a song.

Left hand: I-IV-V progression from Session 3
Right hand: simple melody using the 5-finger position from Session 1
Introduce a very short, well-known simple tune (e.g. a nursery-rhyme-level melody) as the target piece
Homework: hands together, slow tempo, daily
Session 5 — Synth Basics: Sound Design 101

Objectives: Shift focus to the synthesizer, build first patch from scratch.

Oscillator waveforms: sine, saw, square, what each sounds like and why it matters
Filter basics: cutoff and resonance, hands-on knob turning
ADSR envelope: what attack/decay/sustain/release actually do to a sound
Build one patch together from an init/blank patch
Homework: make 3 patches, no "right answer," just explore
Session 6 — Basic Production / DAW Intro

Objectives: Get a simple idea recorded.

Intro to whatever DAW they have access to (or a free option if none)
Record the chord progression from Session 3-4 as a MIDI part
Layer the Session 5 synth patch under it
Talk through arrangement basics: intro, loop, simple structure
Homework: record one more chord idea on their own

- if we continue we will produce a song together and you will learn to record yourself.
