About Emmett
I am Emmett, but professionally go by M.A. You can find my academic profile on the WSU website and on my academia.edu page. As an Assistant Professor, I am recently out of my Ph.D., which I received from the University of California, Davis in 2022. My junior status in academia, I hope, will reinforce that my pedagogy invests in non-judgmental and compassionate learning. I personally am a first-generation college student coming from a working-class background. Because of my personal life trajectory, I deeply value education, particularly reading and writing, as a means of empowering young persons to deeper introspection and more thoughtful, ethical, and nuanced engagement as community members as well as citizens. I also received my M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Mills College in Oakland, CA in 2014. During both my graduate and doctoral studies, I took a number of teaching courses as well as teaching practicums which helped build me into the professor I am today. I am fortunate enough to teach relatively small classes (25-30 students) at WSU-Pullman which allows me to get to know my students as individuals and provide holistic and tailored learning experiences as well as feedback. I have roughly ten years of teaching experience at the university level, serving undergraduate and graduate students who need help with reading, conducting research, essay writing with thesis claims, and the study of the English language and its literatures. I have also over six years of tutoring experience serving students in high school as well, particularly around college admission essay writing and literary analysis writing. If it is related to reading and/or writing, I'm your person. I individualize and tailor my tutoring to where a student is at, what their specific goals are (both related to assignments as well as personal desires) and prioritize the development of lessons particular to each unique student. When offering feedback on writing, I often ask questions and address sites where clarity is lacking. Rather than criticism, I see my objective as helping each student hone their voice as well as fine-tune their ability to demonstrate evidentiary analysis for persuasive and judicious argumentative writing. I hope to offer each student the opportunity to deepen and enrich the complexity of their thoughts by unlocking their academic potential through writing.

My pricing is based on my credentials and my current academic position according to my experience and expertise. I am happy to reassess the hourly price for students who would like to agree to five or more lessons after the initial 30 minutes. Depending on how far the travel is (closer or further), I will also reassess the travel rate, so please don't hesitate to ask.
