About Karen

I am a writer and artist who began working as an educator while in college. I have since worked in various settings including as a bilingual classroom teacher (ES), an Esucational Therapist for at-risk youth, in the Resource Specialist office with LH, CH, and SED children in ES. Specialize in giving individualized instruction and have been able to establish excellent rapport with students.
I have a masters degree in Interdisciplinary Arts and Arts Education from San Francisco State University, where I was awarded the Christine Tamblyn scholarship for academic excellence. I have a bachelors degree in Literature and Poetics from New College of California. My g.p.a. from both schools was 4.0. I have a second degree black belt in Kuk Sool Won Korean martial arts. In 2001 I traveled to Korea for the first World Championship of Kuk Sool Won, where I won 5 medals. I love to travel and to experience different cultures, and I love hiking, camping, and swimming. I am a lifelong poet and book artist, publishing my first poem at age seven and my first novella at age eleven. Most importantly I have a passion for learning and will always consider myself a student. Having learned a few things, I can also proudly call myself a teacher. My style may seem laid back, I am extremely patient and I am not easily intimidated.

Specifically, I can introduce any of the many musical instruments Inolay, including piano, guitar, drums, and some clarinet, as well as reading and composing music, and music theory. Or I can introduce students to poetry using my years of experience as a poetry teacher and as a poet myself.
In short, I am able to adapt lessons to fit the individual needs of each student, with the intention of resolving obstacles to learning, filling gaps caused by missed time during covid or otherwise, and pinpointing any psychological, physiological, or neurological issues that may be interfering with a students ability to learn. I believe in educating the whole person, using any and all methods and methodologies available in the best manner for each individual.
