About Angela
I care deeply about giving every child a positive and confident start in music. Having experienced the challenge of relearning my own fundamentals at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I gained my Honours degree, I understand how important it is to build strong foundations from the very beginning. I tailor my lessons to what each student needs, focusing on posture, technique and musical expression while keeping learning fun and encouraging. I have taught through Big Noise (Sistema Scotland) and the Benedetti Foundation, as well as working with my own private students and I care about helping every learner grow in confidence, creativity and enjoyment of music.

I believe every student learns best when technique, musicianship and enjoyment develop together, not as separate boxes to tick. My teaching draws on a wide range of pedagogical traditions rather than a single "school": Paul Rolland's movement-based technique for a natural, tension-free playing posture; the Kodály and Orff approaches for building strong musicianship, ear training and rhythm from the inside out; and the refined technical principles of Galamian, Fischer, Flesch and the Zweig method (which blends Suzuki repertoire with systematic physical training) for precision in bow arm and left-hand technique. In practice, this means lessons are never just "play the piece and fix the wrong notes". I'm building a student's ear, body awareness and musical instincts at the same time as their repertoire. Lessons run 30 to 60 minutes depending on age and level and generally begin with a short physical warm-up focused on posture, bow hold and left-hand set-up to build good habits that prevent tension and injury later. From there we move into technical work: scales, études or targeted exercises addressing whatever the current repertoire demands, followed by repertoire study that balances structured method books (Essential Elements, Strictly Strings, Suzuki, Fiddle Time) with free-choice pieces drawn from classical, folk, film music or pop arrangements. Musicianship and theory are woven in naturally throughout, including sight-reading, rhythm work, ear training and exam preparation where relevant and every lesson ends with a clear practice plan to take away so progress continues between sessions. I teach children and adults of all abilities, from complete beginners to advanced players preparing for exams, auditions or simply wanting to play well for their own enjoyment. Lessons are genuinely tailored, a young beginner's lesson looks very different from an adult returner's or an exam candidate's and I adjust pacing, repertoire and focus accordingly. Many tutors teach the way they were taught. I've deliberately trained across several major pedagogical traditions so I can adapt to how the student actually learns, rather than fitting every student into one method. My background also spans one-to-one, group and classroom teaching, through my current role as a violin and viola teacher with the City of Edinburgh Council based near Bruntsfield, as well as previous group and classroom experience with Big Noise (Sistema Scotland) and the Benedetti Foundation, so I bring a strong sense of how to keep lessons encouraging and low-pressure, especially for nervous or reluctant beginners. I hold an Honours degree in Violin Performance from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and perform professionally with orchestras and opera companies including the RSNO and Scottish Opera. I was awarded the Horace Fellowes Medal for chamber music at the Edinburgh Competition Festival and currently teach violin and viola with the City of Edinburgh Council, alongside past experience as a group and classroom tutor with Big Noise (Sistema Scotland) and as a Creative Learning and Instrumental Ambassador with the Benedetti Foundation.

Angela is a phenomenal violinist and an equally gifted teacher. She combines technical precision with incredible warmth and patience, making every lesson inspiring and rewarding. If you’re looking for a teacher who will genuinely encourage your growth, build your confidence, and make learning the violin a joy, Angela is as good as it gets!
Angela is a great teacher that you will be lucky to have. She is incredibly encouraging, creative and supportive. During the time when we worked together, she had shown great adaptability in teaching and provided thoughtful guidance to what was best for her students. Her flexibility also helped cultivate the strength and potential in each individual students as well as in group lessons. It is inevitable that her passion in music education makes her a great educator, and for that, I highly recommend her for your lessons.
Angela is not only a great friend I’ve known since we were both studying at the RCS, but also a very reliable, kind, and inspiring teacher. Angela is well respected and experienced; teaching for several years now, and she’s been working full-time with Big Noise. She has grown so much both as a violinist and a teacher, with strong methodological skills that I’m sure will continue to inspire more students of any level.
I highly recommend Angela! :)I would like to recommend Angela as a music tutor; I have known Angela for over 3 years in my capacity as an award-winning film composer and dear friend.
I have had the privilege to work with Angela on numerous projects, where her creativity, diligence, professionalism, musicianship and kindness has allowed projects to flourish, contributing to the wider UK arts sector.
As a conservatoire trained musician, she has performed violin with some of Europe’s leading arts institutions including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Scottish Opera, and continues to actively perform with Red Events UK. She has also won several awards in music festivals and has worked across genres from Classical and Orchestral to Pop and Metal.
Recently appointed upper strings tutor for El Sistema Scotland, she actively works with young people finding innovative teaching strategies, leading ensembles and bringing music education to some of the most deprived communities in Scotland. I have personally witnessed her supportive teaching approaches which has allowed her students at all levels to truly discover the gift of music. She also has years of private teaching experience with many of her students gaining distinction grades in their ABRSM exams.
Angela is a kind, patient, intelligent and supportive individual who is highly respected by her peers. I am confident she can provide high quality education to all, tailoring her approach to each student’s needs and supporting their development every step of the way. It is a privilege to know her and I have no hesitation in recommending her to you.View more recommendations
