About James
James is currently a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the flagship orchestra of the BBC. Recent highlights include tours to Switzerland, Spain, and Japan, and the orchestra's annual performances at the BBC Proms. Recent freelance work includes guest leading the second violins of the National Symphony Orchestra, Dublin. James has also worked with many orchestras around the UK and ROI, including trials with Scottish Ballet for Co Leader, RTENSO for Section Leader 2nd Violin, BBCNOW for Assistant Principal 2nd Violin, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Opera North, and the Ulster Orchestra, several of which have resulted in job offers. Freelance work has included the LSO, ENO, and Philharmonia amongst others. He is also an experienced teacher, including mentoring on the BBCSO/RCM Pathway scheme, as well as having taught many adults and high level students (diploma and above), on top of many years experience teaching for music services, schools, and privately. James grew up in Sussex and began his violin studies with Paula Radford at the East Sussex Music Service, followed by lessons with Sion Parry at Eastbourne College. He was an avid member of the South Downs Youth Orchestra, National Children's Orchestra of Great Britain, and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain before progressing to Cambridge University to read music where he led many orchestral groups including the CU Music Society Symphony Orchestra. Throughout these formative years, James studied the violin with Dona Lee Croft, later taking lessons from Miranda Playfair and Cynthia Fleming. Orchestral music has always been central to his musical experience so it was a natural next step to take the Guildhall School of Music and Drama's Orchestral Artistry Masters, a course run in partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra, studying with Janice Graham. After graduating with distinction, and following a brief period of freelancing, James was offered several jobs with orchestras around the country before taking up his current position with the BBC.

If you have an audition to prepare, if you are thinking of applying to music college, or maybe you have a concerto, or a competition, recital, orchestral concert or perhaps an exam? Perhaps you are interested in improving your violin technique to take yourself up to a higher level, or perhaps you are frustrated with being unable to deliver a reliable performance under pressure? If any of these apply, I can help. I have a proven track record with high-level students as well as a thorough knowledge of what audition panels (professional and otherwise) are looking for, having both spent years developing my own preparation, and having sat on several panels myself. I have a wide knowledge of repertoire, both orchestral and otherwise so I can help with anything from the all-important orchestral excerpts to concertos, sonatas, chamber music and symphonies. I know the ins and outs of preparing for exams, competitions, recitals and more, dealing with nerves, and producing a reliable performance on the day when it really matters. I'm based in Didcot, Oxfordshire, within easy reach of the train station. Didcot is just 15 minutes by train from Oxford, or 10 minutes by train from Reading, or 35/40 minutes by train from London Paddington. Teaching is available from my home or occasionally via home visits to the villages in the surrounding area. Alternatively it is sometimes possible to arrange lessons in London to tie in with my working day. I am happy to offer both one-off and regular lessons. I am also experienced teaching children (7-18) through schools, music services, and privately and I have achieved high results with students in their ABRSM exams including distinctions at diploma level, and several successful scholarship applications to senior schools. I am also available for chamber music and orchestral coaching, and adjudicating.

Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
James has rich musical knowledge and is patient. He understands how to teach young people and has a gentle yet firm approach that helps progress technique but also general musicality. He has helped me prepare for two successful auditions into the National Children's Orchestra, my time being taught by him was very positive.
James is an incredibly kind and patient teacher, providing highly detailed feedback that both directs and inspires my practice. Enhancing my grasp of technique and musicality alike, over the 9 years I’ve worked with James he’s guided me through ABRSM exams for Grades 5 (passed with merit), 7 (passed with merit), 8 (passed with Distinction), and ARSM (passed with merit). Further, he taught me Grade 5 theory (passed with Distinction), and supported successful auditions for the Oxfordshire County Youth, and later my university’s symphony orchestra. James is organised and reliable, and his tutelage has not only improved my competence, but also confidence and enjoyment of the instrument.
James taught our daughter violin for several years taking her all the way from a novice player through to Diploma level. He is a highly accomplished professional musician who inspires students through his own playing. He is an ideal teacher for students at any level seeking to develop and improve their playing technique. We highly recommend him.
James has been an inspirational violin teacher for our children for the last 8 years and we fully recommend his services.
Our eldest three children have achieved grade 5 (practical and theory) before leaving primary school which has then enabled them to go on and apply for music scholarships for secondary school.
Our children have also really enjoyed going along to the Royal Albert Hall to watch him play with the BBC Orchestra during The Summer Proms.
He is also a really nice guy!View more recommendations
