About James
Described as ‘a 100% bona fide, sincere, authentic young artist’ by Alexis Ffrench (BBCYM), James began violin lessons at the age of five and at age ten, having gained 142 for grade 8 violin, met his teacher Boris Kucharsky at the Yehudi Menuhin School ‘Come and Play Day’ and was immediately accepted by him as a student. Having auditioned and been awarded his place in October 2017, James joined the internationally renowned music school in April the following year and is currently in his final year. He was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music and is reading music at King’s College, Cambridge. Throughout his time at YMS, James has performed in many concerts as soloist, chamber musician (including with Mary Bevan, Natalia Lomeiko, Dinara Klinton, Ashley Wass) and in other larger ensembles, including as soloist and director in Vivaldi Autumn in Summer 2022 (with YMS orchestra) and Spring with the Farnham Sinfonia (March 2023). He has participated in masterclasses with Alexander Sitkovetsky, Maxim Rysanov and Menuhin’s pianist Paul Coker with whom he has also played in recital. He won First Prize in the junior section of the Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition (2023). He was chosen to play solo Bach at Menuhin’s Blue Plaque unveiling in London in 2023 and has performed recitals in London and recently in the inaugural Surrey Bach Festival as well as in the Hinchingbrooke Bosendorfer Concerts and King’s Lynn Festival. James plays a violin by the English 19th Century maker John (Jack) Lott. James is also a keen composer and was commissioned by YMS to compose and arrange for the annual virtual Christmas cards (2021-2024).

Lessons range in length from 30 minutes to 2 hours, and I cater them to the needs of the student. Technique is of course important but I believe it is essential to approach it in a musical way so that the technique is not divorced from the music we love to play, keeping learning fresh and engaging for all.
