About James
I am originally from Adelaide, and took a few years away from academic studies, deciding to travel in Asia and later in Europe, where I spent a long time in France. There, I volunteered on farms and eco-projects, working on building fluency in the language. Later, I moved to Canberra to study and will graduate with degrees in Arts (Philosophy) and Science (Biology) later this year. I also enjoy hiking, playing music, and rock climbing.

I lived in France for over a year, working on farms & eco projects, and also spent 7 months on exchange in 2023, taking philosophy classes in French. I was placed at a C1+ level by the university. I can teach you to master all aspects of the language, from pronunciation (French people sometimes ask me if I am French because of my pronunciation ability), to vocabulary and grammar. I take a slightly unique approach: I emphasise actual practice much more than dull exercises from a book. I have learned both ways, having passed through five years of high school classes and later through classes at university as well. Theory has value and is necessary, but it won't take you very far if it isn't supplemented with speaking and listening in a real conversation. I have met so many people who have studied French for years (!!) and still have no confidence in speaking. I emphasise building confidence as quickly as possible – with confidence as a foundation, your learning speed will increase tenfold.
I am also a philosophy and biology student at the ANU and will graduate this year. I love these disciplines and can tutor in biological theory focusing on genetics, evolution, and ecology. In philosophy, I can also teach skills in reading, writing, and constructing/analysing arguments.
