About Madeleine
I'm a PhD candidate in History at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Modern European History but with extensive historical knowledge across a range of other periods and regions. With nearly ten years of tutoring experience, I’ve worked with students from GCSE and A-Level through to undergraduate and postgraduate levels, helping them develop strong analytical skills, academic confidence, and a deep appreciation for the discipline. My approach is rigorous yet supportive: I aim to challenge students intellectually while giving them the tools they need to succeed—whether that's mastering source analysis, refining essay technique, or preparing for exams and university admissions. Alongside my doctoral research, I’ve taught undergraduates at Cambridge and participated in outreach programmes designed to make top-level history teaching accessible to all. I’m passionate about making history engaging, relevant, and empowering for learners of all backgrounds.

As a current PhD candidate in History at the University of Cambridge with nearly a decade of tutoring experience, I approach teaching with a balance of academic rigour and personalised guidance. I believe that the best learning happens when students feel both challenged and supported, so I work to create a space where critical thinking, curiosity, and confidence can thrive.
My teaching methodology is rooted in the Socratic approach: encouraging students to ask questions, engage in dialogue, and develop their own interpretations rather than simply absorbing information. I place a strong emphasis on close reading, source analysis, and argument construction—skills that are essential not only for success in history, but in the humanities more broadly. Lessons typically involve a mix of discussion, targeted feedback on written work, and structured exploration of core topics. I tailor each session to the individual needs of the student, identifying gaps in understanding and building on existing strengths. For exam preparation, I focus on helping students break down mark schemes, structure essays effectively, and manage time under pressure.
A typical lesson runs for 60 minutes, though I offer longer sessions for more advanced students or those preparing for major assessments (such as A-Levels, university entrance exams, or dissertations). Each session is focused and goal-oriented, with time for review and reflection at the end to consolidate learning and plan next steps.
I hold a First-Class undergraduate degree and a Distinction at Master’s level, both in History, and am now completing my doctoral research at Cambridge. Over the past ten years, I’ve tutored students at secondary school, undergraduate, and even postgraduate level, both privately and through university outreach and access programmes. I’ve also worked as a supervisor at Cambridge, leading small-group tutorials, and have experience marking and assessing academic work.
I work with students at all ages - from younger learners wanting to expand their historical knowledge to retirees wanting to use their newly acquired spare time to deepen their understanding of a subject they love! I have taught younger students, mature learners, GCSE and A Level students, students applying for university, and undergraduate and postgraduate students. Whether you're looking to build foundational skills, refine exam technique, or pursue advanced academic work, I tailor lessons to suit your goals and stage of study. Ultimately, my aim is not just to help students succeed in their current courses, but to equip them with the analytical tools and intellectual confidence to thrive in any academic environment.

Madeleine has been a godsend. She tutored me for A-Level History, and inspired me to pursue the subject at degree level. She helped me at every stage of the Oxford admission process, including brainstorming ideas for the personal statement, choosing which written work to submit and then preparing for the interview. I truly believe that I received an offer solely because of her constant encouragement and help. After I received the offer, she helped me prepare for Oxbridge level History by giving me sessions on historiographical debates and teaching me how to write a Uni level essay. She is always so encouraging and supportive, and made sure I was confident discussing high-level topics.
Madeleine helped prepare my son for his English and History GCSEs. She is a consummate professional, and I can highly recommend her services. She makes difficult content engaging and digestible. She truly cares about her students and is willing to go above and beyond to meet their individual requirements.
I can't recommend working with Madeleine highly enough; I approached her in my capacity as an opera producer for some coaching to be able to inform my production historically, and also for articles I had to write about the historical performance style. She is a fountain of information and gave me so much useful help and support through the process. She has brilliant energy and is genuinely passionate about using her knowledge to help other people! I'll be going back to her for future help and also for tuition for my daughter when the time comes.
