As a mediocre Spanish speaker, being semi-fluent in broken Spanglish at best, I constantly felt out of place at family gatherings with my Spanish-speaking relatives. When a joke was told, I only laughed when everyone else laughed; I never contributed to the conversation except in short broken phrases and often used other relatives to translate for me. After meeting with Kasey, however, I was able to gain confidence in my Spanish speaking. She not only helped with the simple things such as grammar and sentence structure but also went into different cultural aspects and even taught different colloquialisms than normal textbooks and websites don't teach. Before I knew it, I was able to tell my own jokes around the table and not rely on others to know when to laugh.
