About Shivani
I am Math Tutor with more than 5 mounth experience teaching and showing students why they shouldn't be afraid of numbers, equations and word problems. I am a Bachelor Degree holder in Statistics and have maintained a 3.7 average in all my Math subjects. I know what students go through when it comes to dealing with intimidating subjects and have the means to help them overcome fear so they can harness their true abilities.

Mathematics can be very fun, if nicely explained. I think the approach to teaching maths must be audio-visual to enhance the retentivity of students.
Like, for toddlers, instead of teaching them 1+1=2, we can bring small candies and use the candies to do the math.
For teaching solids, we can show them models of cylinder, cubes and cuboids. We can show them the derivation of the formulas using those models.
They should be given DIY kits where they would make their own models.
For complex concepts, like Probability, you can arrange a lottery in your class or bring dice and show them the different outcomes and let them note the observations and finally conclude which probability is higher. Then explain the theory to them.
For calculus, the scope of creativity is huge. In the introductory class, you can arrange a debate on the topic “Leibnitz vs. Newton”, on who should be given credit for inventing calculus. Let the students research and present their views. Now, judge them and reward the student who gave the most promising arguments.
Carrying on further, if you have a projector, you can use Desmos Graph to explain continuity, differentiability and integrals. Instead of burdening children with formulas on limits and derivatives, derive them using some creative methods, like the one used by 3Blue1Brown and then ask them to find a method to derive themselves.
Crack jokes and humour which is relevant to Maths. Make some Math memes and ask students to make them too.
Refer them Youtube channels like: BlackPenRedPen, FlammableMaths, Mathologer, etc.
Before starting any topics, tell students the history about the topic. Like, before teaching them irrational numbers, tell how ancient mathematicians and philosophers were at their wit’s end when √2 popped up. They could do nothing since only integers existed then. And no integer satisfied the condition that it’s square will be 2.
For complex numbers, tell them how for so many centuries, the question remained unanswered on what number squared will give -1. Tell them about Euler, Gauss, etc.
Arrange some math for fun classes where show them how to make a Mobius strip and then teach them a little bit about Klein Bottle or the golden ratio.
