About Ian
At school, you can find me eager to learn more about how our world works (especially when it comes to mathematics and physics); tutoring other students in relevant subjects as a volunteer; and operating under the role of Executive at our school's Physics Club. Outside of school, I am a competitive swimmer with the Milton Marlins Swim Team, aiming to compete at a provincial level by the end of my age group career; competing in Maths and Physics contests for fun; and investing my time into a summer research project on fluid sloshing dynamics. From all my activities, I have harboured a strong sense of discipline and resilience, as well as developing time management and organizational skills that will benefit me in years to come.
When I was first introduced to Physics, I instantly fell in love with it because of how strongly it integrated with math (another favourite subject of mine). I put in a lot of effort to achieve my goals in the subject, and as a consequence learned to value the process of learning far more than just achieving goals. I think that a life lesson that I will continually learn time and time again is that successful outcomes occur more often when you enjoy and love the process, rather than treating the process as a means to an end (i.e. outcomes). In other words, I learn for the sake of learning, not for the sake of a high mark.
I also learned that teaching others *how* and *why* physics works is far more rewarding than just *what* the physics is (or worse, not at all). This love of teaching led me to be a volunteer tutor at my school since 2024, and to create an open-source document for SL (and soon, HL, too) Physics notes for all my peers to use.
My past marks:
Level **7** SL Physics Final IB Grade
**99%** in Grade 11 SL Physics
**100%** in Grade 12 SL Physics

The main part of my methodology as a tutor, especially for physics, is that I always emphasize learning *how* and *why* concepts and equations are the way they are. I don't just show you what the kinematics equations are, I take you step-by-step through the process of deriving all the equations so that you understand where all the variables come from. I also prioritize solving problems generally; that is, I teach students how to solve all similar variations of a single problem rather than teaching them how to just solve a single one.
Physics is a *very* difficult subject; as such, I curate individual lesson plans for each student and give plenty of practice problems--after all, no one can get better at what they do without practicing! Given the nature of the subject difficulty, I also provide study tips and advice on dealing with the pressure of the course on its own (and for IBDP students, coping with the pressure as a whole).
These lessons are for students in Grades 11-12 (or taking the relevant course) or for SL Physics students who are able to just pass the expectations of the course (i.e. 70% minimum Ontario U-level Physics, 40% raw minimum for SL Physics); for those under this, the best advice I can possibly recommend for you is to consider whether you are putting in the effort required of you to achieve the grades you want to get (a good rule of thumb is that to achieve high 90s or level 7s in this course, you need to be spending a MINIMUM of 2-3 hours per day learning--these are *really* tough courses, so putting in the effort is a key part of success, here), and if you are not at that level of effort you should work to get there.

Ian took my Grade 11 ALP (Accelerated Learning Programme) Functions class, and he was an ideal mathematics student. He is hardworking, dedicated, and passionate about math, yet also personable and friendly, which is a rare combination when it comes to people who are talented in this subject. He patiently explained solutions to challenging math problems to his peers in the class, and he always persevered, going over and above what was expected of him. His final mark was 100%, which he fully earned. I am confident in recommending Ian, as he has proven to be extremely knowledgeable in this subject, in addition to being reliable in general as a person.
Ian volunteered as a peer tutor in my ESL Math class. He was patient, personable, and explained concepts well. Ian was reliable and the students appreciated his help greatly. He often faced a challenge of explaining a math concept to a student who did not understand English and also had many gaps in their understanding. I would highly recommend Ian as a tutor!
I met Ian through my school’s volunteer tutoring program. I needed help with the grade 10 math course; my teacher recommended that I sign up for the program. I got matched with Ian, and he was very friendly and supportive of my goal to improve in the course. He asked me what I felt strong in, what my weaknesses were, and expertly created lesson material that allowed me to learn the concepts in a way unlike any that I’ve experienced before. He helped me since April leading up to the exam a few days ago, and I believe that if it weren’t for Ian, I would not have confidently answered as many questions as I did. Thanks again Ian and good luck!
During breaks with Ian at school, I consistently get to see his burning passion for mathematics. He has helped me with concepts I was unsure of, like sequences or area and perimeter, and taught them to me in a way that was easy to understand and apply. His teaching methods and how he prepares his material in advance is unique and very insightful. Highly recommend!
I reached out to Ian because I was struggling with Grade 10 math in Ontario, especially the trigonometry unit. He put together a personalized review package and guided me through the material step-by-step. His explanations made things click, and I felt way more confident by the end. He also went in-depth into some topics - for example not just memorizing the Quadratic formula, but actually understanding its derivation. Ian’s a fantastic tutor who was knowledgeable, patient, and easy to work with. I’d definitely recommend him to anyone who needs help in math. Thanks again, Ian!
Ian has been a star A student in all of his subjects in high school. He dazzled me the first time he got to know my child with his ability to get into a friendly and trustworthy relationship with my son. In a matter of 3 months, my son’s grades move from 3- to 4+, end even 5 in maths and physics in particular.
My son’s always described Ian’s way of teaching as easy to understand, to the point, and practical to implement right away.
I’d really highly recommend him for your children education and progress!Ian is very patient, knowledgeable, engaging, and able to effectively communicate complex concepts of maths
adaptable to the students learning style and has a positive and encouraging demeanour… highly recommendedView more recommendations
