About Irem

Hi, I’m Irem! I’m an English teacher in Nottingham, and I love helping people feel confident with English, whether that means enjoying a good poem, writing a great essay, or speaking up without worrying about getting it wrong.

A little about me: I have two Master’s degrees in English Literature (including one from the University of Nottingham) and a TEFL certificate. Over the years I’ve taught secondary school pupils, lectured university students, and tutored children one-to-one and in small groups. These days I also run a friendly conversation group for adult learners here in Nottingham, which I really enjoy.

I’ve volunteered with NGOs back home in India too, and I’ve won prizes for debating and public speaking. Those experiences taught me that confidence matters just as much as grammar, so I always make sure my students feel relaxed and encouraged.

What my lessons feel like:

Hello, I’m Irem, an English teacher with two Master’s degrees in English Literature and a TEFL certificate. I’ve taught secondary pupils in school, lectured university students, and tutored children one-to-one and in small groups. I now volunteer in Nottingham, leading conversation groups for adults who are building their spoken English.

My approach and methods

I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable, so I start with their level, goals and pace and build from there. I break difficult material into small, manageable steps and use a mix of methods:

Guided conversation and speaking practice to build fluency and confidence
Close reading and textual analysis to help students understand and enjoy what they read
Step-by-step modeling of essay writing and exam technique
Active tasks such as role-play, recitation and discussion, so lessons aren’t just listening

A typical lesson

A short, friendly warm-up or recap of the last session
The main focus, such as grammar, a text, writing or speaking, taught step by step
Guided practice, with support and feedback while the student tries it
A short review of what went well and what to work on next

I adjust this to each student. Some prefer more conversation, others more writing practice.

Strong subject knowledge in both English language and English literature, so I can help with grammar and speaking as well as analysis and essays
A patient, encouraging style that builds the confidence of nervous or quiet learners
Experience with multicultural, mixed-ability learners and with learners who speak English as an additional language
A background in debate and public speaking (prize-winning), which I use to help students express themselves clearly
