About Soumava

Hello Everyone! I am Soumavo Banerjee, a disciple of the legendary tabla player Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, although I have trained under Pandit Swapan Chowdhury as well, so I have learned traditional classical (qaidas, relas, gats and chakradars) and semi-classical (laggis and rau) techniques and compositions. I have been playing and learning tabla for the last 18 years and performing for the last 8 years, primarily tabla solos and accompanying other instrumentalists.

About the class

My method of teaching focuses on individual attention, so I shall be training you or your ward on a one-to-one basis, focusing on such essential nuances like finger position, force direction and muscle group isolation, as well as imparting traditional and modern compositions in accordance with the age, expertise level and genre (classical, semi-classical, fusion) of the student. I have separate online classes on separate days dedicated to different genres so that they don't interfere with each other.

Soumavo truly is an exceptional tabla player and a great teacher, if I say so myself. His expertise and maturity extend beyond his age and his simplistic teaching methods and calm, gentle demeanour helps my child learn quickly and efficiently without stress.

Soumava is one of the best teachers I know, not only when it comes to tabla but in general. His teaching style is soft, simple yet highly effective. All of his students, ranging from the ages of eight to eighty, look up to him not only as a mentor but also as a friend and confidante.
