I believe anyone who is creative can do art and there is no specific way art should be done. However there are certain steps to go about. Practicing basic figures and strokes are few of them. Once they are done with the basics, I prefer introducing them different mediums and techniques and allowing the students to choose their own choice of refrences or their imagination, since art is all about how you perceive the world.
