About Luke

I’m Luke, and I tend to work best with students who want explanations that go a little deeper than “do it again.” If something is not working, I want us to identify which part of the movement is responsible. Sometimes the answer is surprisingly small: a thumb that tightens before a shift, a bow that changes angle during a string crossing, or a finger that lands correctly but arrives too late. Those details interest me because fixing one small cause can sometimes change an entire phrase.

I also do not expect you to become comfortable simply because I tell you to relax. Violin can feel physically awkward, especially when you are concentrating on several things at once. We will build comfort by reducing the number of things your body has to think about at one time. First the movement becomes understandable. Then it becomes repeatable. Only after that do we ask for speed, expression, or complexity.

My goal is for you to eventually need me less when you practice. I want you to be able to hear a problem and think, “I know what caused that,” rather than immediately assuming you are simply bad at that passage. If you are the kind of student who likes knowing exactly why something works and wants a precise way to fix what does not, we will probably work well together.

If you can usually tell that a note is out of tune after you play it, but you are never completely sure how to fix it, this is the kind of problem I like working on. We will not treat intonation as “move your finger around until the note sounds right.” Instead, we will build reference points. Certain notes will become anchors that you can reliably find, and from those anchors we will train the distance your hand needs to travel. We can use open strings, neighboring notes, slow listening, and very short two- or three-note patterns until your ear and hand begin agreeing with each other. The goal is to reach the point where you start recognizing where a note belongs before someone has to tell you that it is sharp or flat.

We will use a similar approach with the bow. If your sound becomes scratchy near the frog, weak near the tip, or unpredictable when you change strings, I will not simply tell you to “use more bow” or “relax.” We will isolate where the sound changes. We can take one open string and experiment with bow speed, contact point, pressure, and the angle of the bow until you can hear exactly what each variable does. Then we put that control back into a piece. I want you to understand why one bow stroke produces a clear sound and another does not, because once you can hear and feel that difference, correcting yourself becomes much easier. This emphasis on posture, bow control, intonation, and step-by-step technical development reflects recurring priorities in the violin profiles from the reference material.

For difficult passages, we will rarely practice them from beginning to end ten times. I prefer what I call small-loop practice: find the exact two or three notes where the problem begins, remove everything unnecessary, solve that movement, and then add one note before and one note after it. If the issue is a string crossing, we may temporarily remove the left hand. If the issue is a shift, we may remove the bow. If the rhythm is hiding an intonation problem, we may slow the rhythm down before rebuilding it. You are not practicing the entire passage when only five percent of it is actually causing the problem.

This approach tends to work especially well for students who have already learned some violin but feel that their playing is unpredictable: one day the piece works, the next day it does not. I want to replace that feeling with a system. You should know what you are listening for, what your hand is trying to do, what your bow is trying to do, and what to change when the result is not right. Eventually, practice stops feeling like repeated attempts and starts feeling more like problem solving.
