About Tammy
Enthusiastic Social Sciences Tutor
Covid-19 – something which is imprinted within our minds in contemporary society. I have chosen to begin with this to explain my ability to teach online. I am a teacher within a further education college, I teach Sociology on the Access to Higher Education course as well as teaching Criminology at degree level varying amongst the first and second-year degree students. Given today’s pandemic, I have had to adjust to teaching my students online, providing them with resources, helping them write assignments, and more so ensuring they are confident still within their studies as well as maintaining the support given to them from myself and other members of staff. Before the pandemic I taught in multiple different ways, as I am teaching degree students, I want to encourage them to be self-taught, I want to help them embrace individual learning where possible. I always set extra reading for the students to help them achieve a better understanding of the subject in question, I always provide assessment guidance booklets also. I am confident I have the technological and teaching knowledge to enable students gain a clear understanding of the subject taught to them. I always provide my students with booklets at the beginning of modules, this allows them to see what will be expected each week within the module, but also breaks down assignments, gives them keywords to focus on, and extracurricular activities to allow those students who wish to, to excel within their studies.
I can review, grade, and give feedback of students work. At my current role I am grading year 1- & 2-degree students. I am confident within the classroom and teach with PowerPoints and accompanying resources. I appreciate everyone works to their own ability in their own preferred way. I am confident in stating that my involvement in the BA Social Science degree has allowed a smooth delivery of the modules, as well as myself rewriting certain modules which I felt were not adequate for the course. In terms of managing the modules within Criminology I have recently created five new modules for the BA Social Science. This included creating and stating the module specification, the aims of the module and most importantly the learning outcomes of the module. Accompanied by a specified reading list which enabled me to find the books and ensure they were of satisfactory quality myself. I am confident in not only creating these new modules, but running modules, I am a very organised person so always have my work planned, including all teaching resources and student resources. In my position as a Social Sciences lecturer I gained various experience, including tutoring, delivering lectures both online and in the classroom, marking work and returning with feedback, managing resources on the online platform. I have excellent interpersonal skills, assertive communication, cooperation, teamwork and listening. I have the ability to confidently plan and prioritise individual learning plans, strategic assessments throughout the whole module whilst ensuring continuous monitoring of the student’s ability and progress ensuring I identify opportunities for students to achieve their goals. This current academic year I have delivered various modules to sixty plus students, all varying levels, level 3, 4 & 5. In a previous role at a sixth form college I delivered law to 100+ students.
Before my teaching career I followed my desire to study Criminology at degree level. After studying A-Levels I continued to University to begin my Social Science journey. At this point I did not realise I would want to teach this to others. I obtained a 2:1 BSc Criminology and Law. I then excelled in education and achieved an MSc in Applied Social Research, working with Criminology and statistics. This degree allowed me to gain understanding of SPSS – understanding large data sets and complex analysis with the ease of using and understanding Chi-squared tests, T-test, Mann-Whitney U-test and so forth. Throughout these four years I grew increasingly passionate about Criminology, the differing aspects of the subject, the different theories,
but more so – the questions what are still getting asked. ‘Why does prison not work?’ ‘Why are people still reoffending?’ What makes a criminal?’ … This is one of the many reasons I still read so much around the subject, therefore I decided to achieve my PgCE to continue with the subject of Criminology and to teach this to others. The fact I have such a passion for it, I believe shows when I am teaching my students, it allows me to enjoy my job, which means my students enjoy my teaching and more so, their learning.

I am free all evenings, and weekends for online tuition. Engaging a student into the subject is my main priority! Allowing them to delve into the subject, and enjoy what they’re learning, this way they will achieve better understanding and memory of the topic! I like to work with resources such as flash cards, problem solving, quizzes etc. This helps them first grasps the basics. I like to develop a rapport with my learner, so I can teach and understand their favoured teaching style. I am an adaptable person and will cater to the specific tutoring needs of each individual learner. Some learn better with passages of texts to focus on, some prefer to answer questions, where as some may like to just sit and have one to one discussion for instance.
