About Piran
I’m a quantum scientist and engineer with a PhD in Physics (New York) and over fifteen years of experience exploring how the natural world works — from graphene, 2D materials and superconductors to the fundamental principles behind modern science and applications such as quantum computing. I’ve taught and mentored students at Yale University, the University of Manchester, as well as tutoring GCSE, A-level, and pre-medical students in Sri Lanka, UK and USA. Through all these experiences, I’ve learned that understanding science changes how you see the world. Teaching lets me share that moment when a student connects an idea to something real — when a difficult topic suddenly makes sense and confidence takes over. That spark is what keeps me teaching.
Besides my teaching and research engagements, I enjoy reading books, communicating science to the general public. I have also mentored school students competing in science fairs and international physics and research competitions.

Science can seem abstract, but I believe every idea becomes intuitive when it’s connected to real experience. My goal is to make complex concepts feel simple, logical, and even exciting. I focus on why something works — not just how to use a formula — so students build lasting understanding rather than short-term memorisation. I also understand that many students want to excel in exams — to reach the top grades that open doors to their next stage. My lessons are designed to achieve both: genuine understanding and strong exam performance.
We focus on mastering key concepts, refining problem-solving skills, and learning how to think like an examiner, so that you don’t just memorize — you truly understand and perform at your best. My lessons begin with diagnostic questions to identify what a student already knows and where their misconceptions lie. From there, I use diagrams, analogies, and step-by-step examples to make each topic clear. Once confidence is built, we move to past-paper practice and timed problem-solving, developing exam technique and precision. I tailor every session to the individual — their pace, strengths, and learning style. For some, that means interactive discussions; for others, structured problem sets or conceptual “mini-lessons.” I also maintain a personalized progress tracker so students can see improvement over time, which keeps motivation high. Having taught everyone from beginners to university undergraduates and pre-meds (USA), I know that success in science comes from two things: clarity, passion and confidence. My teaching philosophy is simple — make science make sense and results will follow naturally.
