About Ashley
I spent decades working as a librarian before shifting into private Spanish teaching, and that career gave me a genuinely deep, patient love of books and quiet, thoughtful conversation. Nineteen years into teaching now, I have guided approximately six hundred ten students, building nearly every lesson around genuine reading and real, meaningful discussion. My library background gives me an unusually broad, curated sense of appropriate reading material for every level and interest, insight built from decades of matching readers with the right book. I work particularly well with students who genuinely enjoy reading or want to develop that habit alongside their growing language skill over time. My teaching style is calm, thoughtful, and genuinely bookish, built on decades of quiet, patient library work rather than a formal teaching credential alone. I have guided numerous students toward genuine literacy and lasting fluency, watching many develop a real, lifelong relationship with reading in Spanish specifically. Students consistently tell me our lessons feel more like a good conversation about a good book than formal instruction, which I take as real success. I take genuine pride in helping students discover an author or story that stays with them well beyond our actual lessons together. Lessons stay calm and unhurried, closer to a thoughtful library conversation than a rushed classroom drill, because I've found real learning happens best without unnecessary pressure or noise. Vocabulary grows from genuine reading, discussed together in detail, since words encountered in real context stick far better than isolated lists memorized without meaning attached. Grammar gets explained through careful examples pulled directly from what we're reading, showing exactly how structures function in real, genuine writing rather than artificial sentences. I encourage students to keep a small reading journal, noting new words and reactions, a habit borrowed directly from decades spent helping library patrons track their own reading. Speaking practice happens through genuine discussion of stories and ideas, building natural fluency through real conversation rather than rehearsed, scripted dialogue exercises. I maintain a small, ever-growing list of recommended books and articles for every student, tailored carefully to their evolving interests and level. Every lesson leaves a student with something to read and think about.
