About Shelby

Hi, I'm Shelby! I have a Bachelor's degree in Communicative Disorders and professional experience working with children in speech and language development.

My background has given me a strong foundation in speech sounds, phonetics, language development, and the skills that support learning to read. I especially enjoy helping children who need additional support with phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, and reading confidence.

I believe children make the most progress when they feel comfortable making mistakes and don't feel embarrassed or pressured when something is difficult. I am patient, encouraging, and adapt my approach to the individual child.

I love seeing the moment when something finally “clicks” for a child and reading begins to feel less frustrating and more achievable.

About the class

Does your child struggle to sound out words, remember letter sounds, blend sounds together, or read fluently and confidently?

My reading and phonics sessions are individualized to meet your child where they are and strengthen the foundational skills they need to become a more confident reader.

Depending on your child's needs, we may work on:

• Phonemic awareness — hearing, identifying, blending, and manipulating sounds in words
• Letter-sound relationships and phonics
• Blending and decoding unfamiliar words
• Word reading and spelling patterns
• Reading fluency and accuracy
• Vocabulary and reading comprehension
• Building confidence and reducing frustration around reading

My background in communication disorders ( Speech & Language) gives me a strong understanding of speech sounds, language development, and the connection between spoken and written language.

Lessons are encouraging, interactive, and tailored to your child's current abilities rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. My goal is not simply to get through reading assignments, but to help children strengthen the underlying skills that support successful reading.
