• 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  My journey into the realms of mathematics and physics began early on, but it was during my high school years that my affinity for these subjects truly blossomed. Scoring 97% in Physics and 94% in Maths was not just an academic milestone; it was a clear indicator of where my passion lay. This passion was further cemented at Northumbria University, where I currently serve as an Assistant Professor. My seven years of teaching experience across various age groups and examination boards have only deepened my commitment to these fields.
  
  Private tutoring started as a natural progression of my teaching career in 2015 while pursuing my master's. I realized that the one-on-one interaction of tutoring allowed for a tailored approach, enabling me to address the individual challenges faced by students. Over 300 hours of online tutoring and a consistent 100% success rate later, my initial interest has evolved into
  a dedicated professional pursuit.
  
  It's in these personalized settings that my drive to instill a fundamental understanding of concepts, and the skill to link them to real-world situations, truly shines. My approach is always to connect with my students on a level that transcends the traditional teacher-student dynamic, fostering an environment where learning is as enjoyable as it is effective.

• 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  As an Assistant Professor with a deep-rooted passion for education, I specialize in GCSE and Alevel Maths and Physics, subjects that form the foundation for understanding the universe's mechanics and the mathematical language describing it. In physics, I am particularly drawn to discussing topics such as classical mechanics, which reveal the poetry of motion, and
  electromagnetism, which uncovers the tapestry of forces that shape our world. My enthusiasm for mathematics is best seen in calculus and algebra, where we explore the beautiful logic underpinning the structure of mathematical thought.
  
  On the other hand, teaching programming through Matlab and R has opened a new avenue for my students and me. Programming is like a bridge that connects theoretical knowledge with practical application, and I revel in the moments when students see their code come to life.
  
  While I enjoy the challenge of complex topics, I find that rote memorization, which is less prevalent in maths and physics, but sometimes necessary, is less engaging for both me and my students. I believe in understanding the 'why' behind the 'what,' which makes topics that rely heavily on memorization less appealing in my teaching repertoire. However, I am committed to making even these less favored topics accessible and relatable, using a variety of teaching tools and real-life examples to engage my students' curiosity and interest.

• 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  Throughout my academic journey, I've been fortunate to encounter many mentors, but one stands out as a significant role model: my high school physics teacher. His ability to translate the abstract concepts of physics into palpable understanding was nothing short of magical. He taught with such vigor and clarity that even the most complex theories became accessible. His classes were not just lessons; they were explorations into the fabric of reality.
  
  What inspired me most was his consistent encouragement to question, to delve deeper than the surface, and to find joy in the pursuit of understanding. He embodied not only the intellect and expertise necessary to master a subject but also the compassion and patience required to teach it. His impact went beyond the classroom, instilling in me a broader vision of what it means to be an educator: to enlighten, inspire, and challenge.
  
  In my current role, I strive to mirror that blend of enthusiasm, insight, and mentorship. Whether I'm elucidating a complex physical phenomenon or demystifying a challenging mathematical problem, I endeavor to ignite the same spark of curiosity and passion for learning that my role model instilled in me.

• 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  In my view, an effective tutor embodies a blend of deep knowledge, adaptability, empathy, and a passion for teaching. Firstly, a firm grasp of the subject matter is essential. This provides the foundation upon which all teaching is built, allowing the tutor to answer questions confidently and explain concepts from multiple angles.
  
  Adaptability is also crucial. Each student is unique, with their own learning style, pace, and interests. A good tutor must tailor their approach to fit the individual needs of their students, sometimes thinking on their feet to find new ways to convey a concept.
  
  Empathy is what allows a tutor to connect with their students on a personal level, understanding their frustrations and anxieties. This connection is not just about academic success, but about building confidence and fostering a safe environment where students feel comfortable to express themselves and make mistakes.
  
  Lastly, passion for teaching is what transforms good tutors into great ones. It's the enthusiasm and energy they bring to their sessions that can inspire students and instill a love for the subject that lasts a lifetime.
  
  In my practice, these qualities are not just ideals; they are the principles that guide my daily interactions with students. They are what I believe make me more than just an educator, but a trusted mentor and guide in their academic journey.

• 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  One anecdote that stands out and encapsulates the beauty of teaching occurred during an Alevel physics class. We were discussing the principles of optics and the nature of light. To illustrate the concept of refraction, I set up a simple experiment using a glass of water, a pencil, and a laser pointer. The class observed how the pencil appeared to bend when viewed through the side of the glass and how the laser beam changed direction as it passed from air to water.
  
  There was one student, typically quiet and reserved, who seemed particularly puzzled. He stayed after class, and together, we delved deeper into the experiment. I explained how light travels at different speeds in different media and this change in speed causes the light to bend. We drew diagrams, calculated angles, and even discussed the real-world applications of
  refraction in technology and nature.
  
  The next day, this student came to class with a sparkle in his eyes, eager to share how he explained the concept to his younger sibling using a flashlight and a fish tank. He'd not only understood the concept but had also caught the enthusiasm for sharing knowledge. It was a profound reminder that the lessons we teach can extend beyond the classroom walls, inspiring curiosity and a passion for learning in others.
  
  This experience affirmed my belief in the power of practical examples to make abstract concepts tangible and the importance of encouraging students to explore and teach what they learn, reinforcing their understanding and confidence.

• 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  In the ever-evolving fields of Maths and Physics, one of the significant challenges I face is ensuring that my knowledge remains current and comprehensive. These subjects are not static; they grow and transform with each scientific advancement and educational paradigm shift. Keeping abreast of the latest research, pedagogical strategies, and technological tools for education requires constant study and professional development.
  
  Another challenge is the wide range of abilities and learning styles among students. Crafting lessons that are accessible and engaging to everyone, from the most to the least confident, demands creativity and flexibility in my teaching methods. It is a delicate balance to challenge the advanced students while simultaneously supporting those who need more help.
  
  Additionally, there's the challenge of online tutoring. While it offers incredible flexibility and accessibility, it lacks the physical presence that often helps in gauging a student's understanding through their body language and non-verbal cues. Developing strategies to maintain a personal and effective learning environment online has been a learning curve.
  
  Lastly, combating the common misconception that these subjects are inherently difficult and not applicable in everyday life is an ongoing battle. It is my mission to demystify these subjects and show students the beauty and utility of Maths and Physics in the real world.
  
  Despite these challenges, the rewards of teaching—seeing a student's sudden comprehension
  or growing passion for the subject—make every effort worthwhile.

• 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  My foremost passion is indeed teaching, but it is intrinsically connected to a deeper love for discovery and understanding the universe's intricacies. Within the realm of teaching, my heart lies especially in the moment of revelation when a complex concept becomes clear to a student. This is not just teaching; it's a shared exploration where each question leads to deeper
  knowledge and appreciation of the subject.
  
  Beyond the classroom, my passion extends to the fields of Environmental Engineering, remote sensing, and geographic information systems. The confluence of these disciplines allows me to appreciate the synergy between human-made systems and natural phenomena. This is where my enthusiasm for programming, particularly in Matlab and R, plays a crucial role. It is a tool that allows me to model, analyze, and solve intricate environmental problems, providing a practical application for abstract mathematical and physical theories.
  
  Outside of academia, my zeal for photography, cinema, and cricket enriches my life. Each of these hobbies offers a different perspective on the world and allows me to unwind, gather inspiration, and connect with others on a level beyond academics.
