About Smriti

I am an enthusiastic, hardworking, and reliable individual, who acquired a PGCE (Maths) with QTS at Sheffield Hallam University. I work in a secondary school teaching Maths to pupils of years 7-11 covering all ability ranges, and have tutored for more than 10 years. I have more than 10 years’ school teaching experience. My good communication skills, ability to adapt lessons to what works best for individual pupils, and effective mentoring skills make me a very effective and successful tutor. I encourage and motivate pupils to take a responsible and conscientious attitude to study by making it relevant to real-life situations. I can offer a personalised learning programme for every individual pupil bridging the gap in learning. I understand that building a good rapport and effectively breaking the ice is very important when creating and maintaining a positive learning environment. As well as teaching maths I am able to teach accountancy to university degree level. I have gained an understanding of Rosenshine’s principles of Instruction and cognitive load theory. They outline how to scaffold learning by breaking the new information into chunks, then providing worked examples and guided practice to enable learners to follow new concepts without experiencing cognitive overload. I use scaffolding techniques such as using partially completed examples to focus the pupil’s attention on the specific steps. Creating a positive environment where making mistakes and learning from them and how to persevere are part of the daily routine. I believe in regular and purposeful retrieval practice of what has previously been taught to help consolidate the material and let pupils remember what they have learned. I aim to build spaced practise as an integral part of my teaching style, to ensure pupils have repeated opportunities to practise, with my appropriate guidance and support. I explicitly teach metacognitive strategies to learners on how to plan, monitor and evaluate their performance to support independence and academic success. I have the ability to teach a particular concept in a variety of different ways, showing patience while delivering the lesson, actively listening to a pupil’s concerns, and providing my subject knowledge and expertise to make them understand difficult concepts. I can use different colours, pictures, videos, highlighters to impart information which makes my online classroom interactive and engaging for students, encouraging them to type, draw and annotate, directly responding to learning prompts. This makes learning more memorable for my students. School : A Levels - Accounting [A*] - Maths [A*]

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in mathematics and accounting developed early in my academic journey, particularly during my commerce studies where I specialised in finance and corporate law. Training as a Chartered Accountant further strengthened my analytical and numerical skills. Over time, I realised how much I enjoyed problem-solving and applying these concepts in practical contexts.

My transition into teaching began with my B.Ed. and later my PGCE in Maths with QTS in the UK. Having also taught Accounting and Business Studies at secondary and post-16 levels, I developed a strong passion for explaining both numerical and financial concepts clearly.

Private tutoring became a natural extension of my classroom teaching. Through roles such as the National Tutoring Programme and my work as an AAT tutor (Levels 2 and 3), I saw how effective one-to-one support can be in helping learners grasp difficult concepts and build confidence.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Mathematics and Accounting, including GCSE Maths, Functional Skills, and AAT Level 2 Accounting. I enjoy helping students understand the “why” behind concepts—whether it’s algebra in maths or double-entry bookkeeping in accounting.

In maths, I particularly enjoy topics like algebra, ratios, and problem-solving as they develop logical thinking. In accounting, I enjoy teaching core principles such as journals, ledgers, and preparing basic financial statements, especially when students begin to see how these apply in real business contexts.

Some learners find topics like trigonometry in maths or adjustments and more complex financial statements in accounting more challenging. However, I enjoy breaking these down into manageable steps and using real-life examples to make them more accessible.
  • 3) Did you have any role models, a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, throughout my academic and professional journey, I have been inspired by teachers and mentors who made complex concepts simple and engaging. During my studies in commerce and accountancy, I had teachers who emphasised understanding over memorisation, which had a lasting impact on me.

Their ability to connect theory with real-world application inspired me to adopt a similar approach in both maths and accounting teaching.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs strong subject knowledge in their field—whether mathematics or accounting—but also patience, adaptability, and empathy. Every learner has a different starting point, so tailoring lessons to individual needs is essential.

Clear communication, the ability to simplify complex topics like algebra or financial accounting, and building student confidence are key. A good tutor should also provide structured guidance while encouraging independent thinking and problem-solving.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I worked with a student studying AAT Level 2 Accounting who initially struggled with double-entry bookkeeping. They found it difficult to understand how transactions affected different accounts.

By using step-by-step explanations, real-life business scenarios, and consistent practice, the student gradually gained confidence. Eventually, they were able to complete tasks independently and performed well in their assessments. Seeing this transformation—from confusion to clarity—was extremely rewarding and reinforced my passion for teaching.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One challenge I have faced is supporting learners with very different ability levels, both in maths and accounting. Differentiating lessons so that all students are appropriately challenged while being supported requires careful planning.

Another challenge is addressing maths anxiety and a lack of confidence in numerical subjects, as well as helping accounting learners grasp abstract concepts like adjustments or financial accuracy. I continue to work on strategies to make these topics more accessible and engaging.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My main passion is teaching and helping learners succeed. I particularly enjoy making both maths and accounting practical and relevant to real life—whether that’s applying percentages to everyday situations or understanding how financial records support business decisions.

I am also passionate about assessment and curriculum development, which is reflected in my work as an examiner and assessment writer. This helps me stay aligned with current standards and bring that insight into my teaching.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

My strength lies in my diverse experience across maths and accounting education. As a qualified teacher, AAT tutor, examiner, and assessment writer, I have a strong understanding of both subject content and exam requirements.

I have worked with a wide range of learners—from school students to adult learners—which has enhanced my adaptability and teaching approach. My background as a Chartered Accountant also allows me to bring real-world relevance into accounting lessons.

In addition, my commitment to continuous professional development, including training in areas such as autism awareness and counselling skills, enables me to support students holistically. I am dedicated to helping learners build confidence, achieve their goals, and develop a positive attitude towards learning.
