I have Early Onset Parkinsn's. There are over 40 recognised symptoms and unfortunately for me one of mine is problems with my speech. My voce had become quiet and also croaky and when I spoke I rushed and stumbled over words. After a years speech therapy with the NHS with little to no progress made I was beginning to lose hope. Thankfully I stumbled across the Parkinson's Voice Project and their Speak Out system and found Louise through their website. I contacted Louise and we spoke about what was going on with my voice. She explained to me what happens to speech in Parkinson's and how the Speak Out method uses intent to improve it. It seemed such a simple idea but it helped almost immediately - I couldn't believe the change in the sound of my voice when I used intent. Louise was very good at explaining how to do this without straining your voice and I soon got the hang of it. As with most things in life there isn't a one size fit all approach that will fix everyone but Louise's experience means she has a wide range of tools to pull from. In my case we have been looking at the impact of our emotions on the voice and my breathing and some exercises to relax me both physically and mentally. I know that working on my speech and swallow is a daily commitment for me now and I am so happy to have found Louise to help me stay on track. I highly recommend her!
