About Sophie
My teaching journey started about five years ago now, in the depths of the covid-19 lockdown.
As a professional garden designer (and plant nut), I realised many people stuck at home were seeing and *actually noticing* their outdoor spaces for the first time, possibly ever. Curious people, desperate for a creative, grounding hobby that might bring them some peace and satisfaction in a world otherwise lost to mindless scrolling and terrifying global headlines. Well, I knew that that hobby was horticulture, and that I could help!
Fast forward, and I’ve seen my students go from total beginners to being able to walk down a street and name every plant they see – *in latin!* They’re teaching their kids about growing food and connecting with their grandparents over their favourite flowers.
My expertise comes from years of studying; starting with a degree in Landscape Architecture, Royal Horticultural Society qualifications plus a certificate in permaculture design; plus years more of working in the garden design field. I had the privilege of working for two of London's top garden designers and RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winners for several years, bringing stunning urban and country estate gardens to life. I then took my knowledge to a national environmental charity, designing teaching gardens for schools and working with communities to improve their urban spaces.
Always keen to learn, my latest adventure is an extended sabbatical in New Zealand, propagating native trees for habitat restoration, learning the arts of viticulture and high-end garden maintenance.

Perfect! Sophie is a passionate, very knowledgable, patient and kind teacher. She works with what you are interested in and for me it has been the botany side but also i want to build my own balcony garden and she makes the her teaching incredibly engaging and works at a pace you like.

Sophie is an excellent teacher and I have learned so much from her so far. She is always prepared for lessons and checks to make sure we are heading in the right direction for me. Her homework assignments are great (yes, homework can be fun!) and she takes the time to go through each assignment with you which really helps bring perspective. I absolutely recommend her!!
