About Elizabeth

Scottish-born Beth has just finished a year of study at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, under the tutelage of Gábor Farkas, as a Weingarten Scholar. Previously she completed her Masters with distinction at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire supported by a full school scholarship, studying with Margaret Fingerhut and Pascal Nemirovski. In 2018 she gained a first class Bachelors degree from the Royal College of Music and was previously at the Purcell School, studying with Gordon Fergus-Thompson and John Thwaites respectively. Throughout her studies, she has had classes with Stephen Hough, Steven Osborne, Kathryn Stott, Dmitri Alexeev, Robin Bowman and Iain Burnside.

She has played recitals at venues including the Southbank Centre, the Wigmore Hall, the Fazioli Concert Hall in Sacile, the V&A, Leeds International Chamber Series and Southwold Arts Festival. Recent 2020 highlights including Dvorák’s Piano Quintet at a pre-CBSO Showcase in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and also touring concerts with the Daphnis Wind Quintet in the South of France. She has recently won RBC’s Sylvia Cleaver Chamber Prize, the Leamington Prize and the English, American and Lieder Song Accompaniment Prizes.

Beth is very passionate about her teaching and studied pedagogy during both of her degrees which involved teaching placements at St. Paul’s Cathedral School London and in Birmingham Music Service. Before leaving for Budapest, she was piano teacher in London schools as well as teaching privately, in amongst her studies, which included organising showcase concerts of student’s work each term.

My teaching has become an irreplaceable part of my life as a musician. Irreplaceable in the sense that the levels of fulfilment and learning involved go both ways. As a young teacher, born into a family of educators, I have grown up understanding the value of effective communication and how to materialise this into progress. My teenage years spent at a specialist music school enabled me to value how important musicianship’s space in society is and how essential it is for holistic learning beyond school.

At the root of my teaching is collaboration. I treat each and every one of my student’s as a musician first and foremost and I never want them to be inhibited. Yes, we work hard to achieve results but music-making is a life-long skill to be nutured and most importantly, enjoyed!

My piano students vary in standard, experience, interests and ages. Some take it very seriously and others don’t - both are just as welcome! All I ask is for attentiveness and open ears to learn. I tend to follow ABRSM/Trinity exam boards so as to acknowledge levels of achievement but also am very glad not to do this. I have a basic syllabus that I follow, comprised of a variety of materials discovered over my six years of teaching but this is often honed to each individual students needs and desires. I am adding to it always, so it is a constant, living, breathing source of my teaching. I also place a lot of value on other aspects of musicianship such as composition and chamber music and encourage students to link up for duet-based lessons.
