About Matthew
I am a composer, teacher, and editor of music with 15 years' experience teaching students from beginner to university level. I hold a PhD in Music and have a particular interest in helping students develop their musical understanding, confidence, and exam skills. My professional experience as a composer and editor informs my teaching, allowing me to support students in areas including analysis, composition, theory, and performance. My own compositions have been performed across Europe.

My music theory lessons are structured to build a clear understanding of how music works, rather than relying on rote memorisation. I focus on helping students understand underlying concepts so they can apply them confidently and independently.
Lessons are tailored to each student’s level and may include harmony, notation, analysis, rhythm, and other core areas of music theory. I provide clear explanations during lessons, along with structured tasks to complete between sessions to support steady progress.
I have experience preparing students for ABRSM and Trinity College London music theory examinations, as well as supporting learners at all levels of theory study. I also hold Grade 8 Music Theory.
I use teaching approaches developed from my own experience as a musician and educator, aiming to make theory more practical, logical, and accessible than traditional memorisation-based methods.
The goal is to help students not only learn theory, but understand it well enough to use it creatively and confidently in their own musical work.

My hourly rate includes lesson preparation and personalised tuition. Students are responsible for obtaining any required books, sheet music, or examination materials.
I operate a 24-hour cancellation policy. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged unless an alternative lesson can be arranged within the same week. I will always try to be as accommodating as possible.
