About Samuel
I have a Bachelor's in math from Lewis & Clark College and a PhD in math from the University of Minnesota. I worked in industry (copper mining and then biotech!) for the last five years. I tutored both in college and in graduate school. In my spare time I like to play the piano and am currently studying Greek.

My teaching method follows Jean Piaget who believed students need to construct their own, internal representations of mathematical concepts. So my lessons are customized to the student and revolve around problem solving. I develop problems that I think would interest that particular student. More puzzles than homework! As a teacher, pick problems that highlight the ideas underlying the complex calculations. Calculations are important, but understanding is critical. I work with students from high school all the way to graduate level math. I've also worked in industry, so some of my students are professionals.
