About Maria
Hello!
My name is Maria Ines, a third-year University Student at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science. Originally from Lima, Peru, I grew up in Canada, native in both English and Spanish and with full French professional proficiency.
I've tutored for as long as I can remember, well over ten years now, in a range of subjects and to plenty of students with their own unique competencies. During COVID-19, I founded a student-led tutoring nonprofit with over 60+ tutors internationally, which was spotlighted in the Calgary Herald Newspaper and awarded by the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Status of Women.

Growing up in an international household, as a polyglot myself, I am a firm believer that the best way to learn a language is by immersing yourself in it. I believe language proficiency extends way beyond the classroom. This is why I stress the importance of cultural enrichment and citizenship through exposure to mediums such as art, literature, music, and tradition.
No language study is linear.
I believe in an individualized student-first approach, whereby I adapt and tailor my lessons, catering to the unique needs of the student. They have an active say in their learning trajectory and direction of the lessons, something we will chart out together from the first meeting and continually update on a per-lesson basis.
My tutoring sessions are designed to be interactive and dynamic, creating an environment where the student feels empowered to take ownership of their learning. It very much lies in building a relationship of rapport and trust to ensure they keep motivated and challenged. But, I find that something as simple as a gentle warmup, engaging in informal conversation to ingrain and put into practice language skills, is a great start to the lesson! Providing a valuable benchmark for ongoing feedback, which both the student and myself can track for progress.
As far as methodology, I am competent in supporting grammar, writing, speaking, listening and reading comprehension. I personally use holistic methods to accommodate diverse learning styles, preferences, and accessibility.
My services offer comprehensive support within and beyond the classroom. The real learning happens outside the session, so drawing from a range of external materials, there is plenty to keep them busy in the interim.
