About Spencer
I have studied Politics successfully at both A Level and Oxford. I achieved full marks on half of my A Level Politics papers, alongside A*s in History, Economics and Maths. I also received full marks for an EPQ combining politics and economics, and again for my History coursework which focused on a question of political ideology and leadership.
I then went on to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Oxford, where I had the time of my life! There, I focused particularly on Modern British Government and Politics, British Political History and Comparative Government.
My experience of politics has not been confined to the classroom. From the age of 15, I was gaining firsthand experience of British politics: shadowing my MP in Parliament, helping welcome the Leader of the Opposition on a constituency visit, attending three party conferences and taking part in campaigning.
I have worked with many successful applicants to Oxford for their PPE course, including mature students and reapplicants.
Although I eventually made it to Oxford, I also know what it is like to struggle at school. I did not really connect with education until Sixth Form and needed additional support with my dyslexia. I also had to reapply to Oxford after narrowly missing out on a place on my first attempt.
Because of that, I understand that academic progress is rarely straightforward. Whether you are aiming for an A*, trying to move up a grade, or simply finding politics difficult at the moment, I hope I can meet you wherever you are in your academic journey and help you move forward with confidence.
I hold an Enhanced DBS certificate and am a member of The Tutors' Association.

Our tutorials will be planned around your individual needs, building from whatever level you are currently working at and moving at a pace that suits you.
Once you have told me what you are finding difficult — whether that is understanding the content, remembering examples, interpreting questions or turning your knowledge into high-mark essays — we will work out exactly what is holding you back and build our lessons around fixing it.
In our work together, I will focus on three things:
1. Building your knowledge and understanding of politics. Rather than simply memorising pages of notes, we will break topics down together and explore the arguments, institutions and political developments behind them. I want you to understand why things happen, so that you can discuss them confidently rather than simply repeat learnt material.
2. Teaching you how to turn that knowledge into marks. We will use past papers, mark schemes, your specimen and examiner guidance to work out exactly what your exam board is looking for. You will learn how to interpret questions, select the right material, structure essays, build clear arguments, use evidence effectively and reach convincing judgements.
3. Showing you how to revise Politics effectively. Politics contains a huge amount of content, so revision needs to be active and well organised. I will help you structure your knowledge, build a bank of useful examples and use active-recall techniques so that you can actually retrieve and apply what you have learnt under exam conditions.
At the end of each lesson, you will receive a lesson pack containing the work we completed together, giving you a useful resource to revisit afterwards and use in your revision.

Spencer was both an inspiration and a fantastic tutor. He broke down the A Level Maths content in a way that made it accessible and intuitive, covering the material in just four months. From having never studied A Level Maths, Spencer was instrumental in helping me achieve the conditions of my Oxford offer.
