About Honor
I've been playing violin since the age of three and hold an MFA in Music Improvisation and Literature from Mills College. For over a decade, I've taught private lessons to both children and adults, helping students build strong technical foundations while developing a personal connection to music.
I run Monaco Violin Studio, an online music studio offering live one-on-one lessons over video. I teach violin myself, and the studio has four more instructors: Bryan Brash teaches viola, Ahren Haedrich teaches guitar, Melanie Scholtz teaches voice and Joe Falconer teaches cello. That means siblings, parents and kids can all take lessons in one place, with the same warm approach and simple studio policies.
I especially enjoy working with adult learners, whether you're picking up the violin for the first time, returning after years away, or looking to deepen your skills. I also love teaching students ages 11 and up who are just discovering the instrument.
Being part of the studio means more than a weekly lesson. Students can join optional group events (Practice Labs for adults, Composer Spotlights and Rhythm Workshops for younger students), receive a weekly "Listening of the Week" email, use free printable practice sheets, and opt in to quarterly progress reports.
My goal is to create a supportive, encouraging environment where students gain confidence, develop musical independence, and build a lifelong relationship with music.

All lessons are live, one-on-one and online over video (Google Meet), so you can learn from anywhere in the US with no commute. Your first 30-minute lesson is free: we'll talk about your goals, see where you are, and map out a plan together.
HOW I TEACH
My teaching combines solid technique and Suzuki-based principles with a flexible, personalized approach shaped around your goals and interests. Each lesson balances technique (posture, bow hold, intonation, tone) with music you actually want to play.
WHAT WE CAN COVER
- Complete beginners: holding the instrument and bow, first notes, first songs
- Returning players: rebuilding technique and confidence after time away
- Intermediate and advanced: repertoire, shifting, vibrato, audition and recital preparation
- Classical, folk and fiddle styles, improvisation, ear training, music reading and rhythm, or simply the songs and pieces that inspire you
I believe students make the most progress when they feel engaged and excited about what they're playing, so every student gets a practice plan built around realistic goals.
VIOLA
Viola lessons are taught by Bryan Brash, who studied with Patricia McCarty at the Boston Conservatory and has spent over twenty years teaching, including as Orchestra and Chamber Music Director at the Boston Arts Academy. He has performed at the Grammy Awards, twice on The Tonight Show, and at the Super Bowl halftime show. If you already play violin the switch is a short one: the bow arm transfers, alto clef is the main new thing, and violists are in far shorter supply when youth orchestra auditions come round.
GUITAR, VOICE AND CELLO
The studio also teaches these online, at the same rates and with the same free first 30-minute lesson:
- Guitar with Ahren Haedrich, acoustic or electric, twenty years performing blues, rock, folk and bluegrass
- Voice with Melanie Scholtz, an award-winning South African jazz vocalist with 23 years of professional experience (Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz 2010; has performed with Wynton Marsalis and Kurt Elling)
- Cello with Joe Falconer, a Suzuki-registered cello teacher with degrees in music education and years of performing experience
