About Umar
I am a self-taught artist and natural historian based in Northern Nigeria. My work spans illustration, design, traditional basketry, botanical cultivation, and arachnology — the study of spiders — which I have researched independently for several years. Alongside my art practice, I run a natural fiber startup, which has deepened my understanding of materials, craft traditions, and process-driven thinking. I am entirely self-directed, which means I know firsthand what it takes to build genuine knowledge outside conventional institutions.
