About Ria

Hi! My name is Ria. I’m a second-year domestic medical student and a tutor for GAMSAT Section 2 (where I’ve scored in the 99th percentile three times), the Casper test, and medical school interviews (both MMI and panel). My students value my highly individualised approach and my ability to make what can feel like an overwhelming exam process clear, accessible, and genuinely achievable.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in medicine developed early on, but it really crystallised during my own journey through the GAMSAT, Casper, and interview process. I saw firsthand how daunting and opaque these assessments can feel—especially Section 2, which is often treated as something you either “have” or you don’t. Once I began achieving consistent top-percentile results, I realised how learnable these skills actually are when the process is broken down clearly. Tutoring grew naturally from that insight. I found genuine satisfaction in helping others feel more confident, capable, and in control of their preparation.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)

I tutor GAMSAT Section 2, the Casper test, and medical school interviews (MMI and panel). I particularly enjoy working with students on idea development, structure, and clarity of expression—helping them move from scattered thoughts to compelling, well-reasoned responses. I also enjoy discussing ethical reasoning, reflective thinking, and how to communicate empathy under time pressure. There aren’t really topics I dislike, but I’m especially careful about avoiding rigid “templates” that strip responses of authenticity. My focus is always on helping students think, not just perform.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes—several teachers and mentors along the way made a lasting impression, particularly those who took the time to understand how I thought rather than just focusing on outcomes. They asked good questions, gave thoughtful feedback, and treated learning as a skill to be developed rather than a fixed trait. That approach strongly influences how I tutor today.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs to be empathetic, adaptable, and genuinely invested in their students’ progress. Strong subject knowledge is essential, but the ability to explain concepts clearly, give honest and constructive feedback, and tailor sessions to each student is just as important. I also think patience and encouragement matter greatly—especially in high-stakes exams where confidence can fluctuate.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school

One moment that stands out is working with a student who initially believed they were “bad at writing” and unlikely to improve. After breaking down the marking criteria, working through targeted practice, and focusing on planning rather than perfection, their confidence shifted dramatically. Seeing that change—not just in their writing, but in how they approached the exam as a whole—was a powerful reminder of why I enjoy tutoring so much.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Like many students, I initially found the subjectivity of Section 2 and interview assessments challenging. It wasn’t always clear what markers were looking for or how to improve meaningfully. Over time, through repeated sittings, feedback, and reflection, I learned how to decode the criteria and refine my approach. That learning process is something I now draw on heavily when supporting my students.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I’m particularly passionate about helping students feel empowered during what can be an overwhelming and stressful journey into medicine. Teaching is a big part of that, but it’s also about mentoring—helping students trust their own thinking, articulate their ideas clearly, and approach assessments with confidence rather than fear.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

What sets me apart is my highly individualised approach, strong results in the exams I teach, and genuine commitment to my students’ progress. I respond quickly, provide detailed and practical feedback, and support students beyond just the lesson itself. Most importantly, I aim to make the path into medicine feel clear, structured, and achievable—something my students consistently tell me has made a real difference
