About Jake
I have recently completed my degree at the University of Brighton studying Mathematics with Finance and obtaining a 2:1. In my final year I opted for a Mathematics in education module where I spent time in a local school researching teaching methods and practice.
With previous tutoring experience for university piers and GCSE students and work as a ski instructor I have a well rounded teaching background.

My teaching method involves presenting knowledge in small steps with student practice after each step, thus preventing overloading students working memory. After my research, I feel that student practice is paramount to progressing, especially as according to the Ebbinghaus Forgetting curve (Ebbinghaus, 2013), roughly 72% of new learning is forgotten in the first 48 hours. With my teaching I intend help students retain the information and skills they learn.

Jake Stevens obtained a BSc(Hons) Mathematics with Finance degree at the University of Brighton in June 2019. I was Jake’s Course Leader and taught on a number of the modules he studied during his degree.
One of the options Jake chose in his final year at University was the module entitled “Mathematics Education: Research and Experience. Students on this module spend 9 or 10 full days during the year at a local secondary school and conduct some research on a specific aspect of maths pedagogy. Jake performed exceptionally well in this module and developed excellent team working and communication skills through his course.
Jake was a very polite and kind person at university and got on very well with all the staff and the other students.
