About Calvin
I studied music at Massey University in Wellington for four years, initially playing bass but gradually my creative interests expanded and now encompass a wide variety of subjects. Predominantly, synthesis is my main focus, the creation and use of electronic circuits to make sound. I love exploring grey areas in music, and sonic "texture".
I describe my musical practice as "Adept Tinkering", the process of experimentation based on a balance of rudimentary knowledge and enthusiastic excitement that yields achievement of initial goals but provides unexpected results (happy accidents).

I believe in a highly communicative approach, sharing of thoughts, interests and techniques, practical learning, and creating a safe space for exploration of ideas and developing a persons unique creative curiosity!
The biggest thing I ever received from teachers I admired was encouragement and a shared enthusiasm for making things and learning. That's what I want to pass on most of all.
These lessons are for those wanting to investigate more abstract musical avenues to apply to their practice and creative process. I think this would best suit someone who already practices an instrument and is wanting to produce their own music or even someone who is more interested in sound (doesn't necessarily play an instrument).
Initial lessons would be 1 1/2 hours to establish a basic structure, and going forward we would design a teaching plan together. Contents of lessons will vary depending on whether you have a focus in mind, and as time goes on and we investigate more. I want to provide dynamic and flexible lessons that can accomodate anyone.
