About Roger
In the summer of 2022 I retired from a series of deeply fulfilling senior positions as an academic (Dean and Professor of structural engineering) at 3 highly respected UK universities.
Prior to semi-retirement, I knew that I wanted to teach A-Level Physics part-time in the UK state school sector. I therefore completed a PGCE in 'Physics with Mathematics' at UCL in 2024. Since obtaining that qualification (I already held BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in engineering) I have been teaching everything on the A-Level Physics syllabus to my Y12/Y13 classes three days a week at a very friendly, inclusive school in Lambeth.
I have knowledge and experience well beyond Physics A-Level and can draw on that to assist with the teaching, to support understanding.
One further feature of my style of instruction is that, wherever possible, I offer visual interpretations (simple clear sketches) of the topic under investigation.

Key features of my teaching style are to ensure that the student becomes very clear about: (i) where the lesson sits within the full syllabus, (ii) the specific equations that are used for that topic, (iii) the underlying physics concept that sits at the heart of the problem and (iv) the type of questions that have appeared, and will appear, in A-Level Exam papers. Each lesson sets structured homework exercises with personalised feedback promptly given on all homework submitted.
No question from a student is considered too elementary to ask; in this way common misunderstandings can be identified and corrected quickly.
The whole atmosphere of each lesson is one of developing a lasting interest in the subject. This approach allows the student to attain the highest possible grades.
