Ella Fitzgerald, one of the most iconic singers of all times, quoted, “The only thing better than singing is more singing”. Her saying is perhaps the most truthful sentence that a singer can ever come across. If you aspire to be a well-trained singer, you should also know this fact that it is an art that needs a lot of practice. Every person or music addict who listens to songs can hum with the tune of the music. However, for becoming a professional or a recognised singer, you have to train yourself under the guidance of the best teachers in the arena. In India, every state expresses its culture and heritage through folk songs and music while housing some of the best academies and institutes.
Out of all the cities, Chennai has a special connection with music. It was the first city to offer a Bachelor of Arts curriculum under Madras University. It also hosts various concerts and music festivals where music lovers and artists get the chance to showcase their talent every year. If you have been a part of these festivals, you know how big a platform they offer to artists. But for preparing yourself for a stage performance, you need a lot of practice and expert guidance. Learn the following exercises to get a standard grip over your voice so that you can modulate it seamlessly.
You cannot expect to become a versatile and melodious singer if you keep signing casually without any professional training or guidance. There are vocal exercises that you have to practice every day before singing. Take the help of an experienced teacher and do the exercises given below to warm up your voice.
This exercise is useful for controlling breathing while singing, especially high pitch songs. Here, you will need to take a deep breath with your mouth open as if you are yawning. Then hold your breath for 10 seconds and slowly exhale through your nose, just like we sigh in general. This one is a simple yet very effective exercise that will allow you to sharpen your voice.
Most of the Indian songs give a lot of emphasis on melodious humming to build the mood of the song. To master that art, you have to start with slow humming without straining your vocal cords while doing so. Put the end of your tongue touched to the back of your upper teeth and make a slow sound with your voice. You can modulate the tone in between to adjust the sound of “Hmmm” while practising.
You must have seen and heard the elders making a motorboat sounds using their lips in front of toddlers to make them laugh. The lip buzzing exercise is exactly similar to it. Vibrate your lips while making it sound like a motorboat for one minute. Then take a deep breath and start again. This warm-up is easy and effective.
Take a straw and cover one side of it with your lips. Then, start singing your favourite song starting from the low pitch and eventually to the high pitch. You have to make your voice pas through the straw. You can also take a half-filled glass of water, put the straw in it and blow to make small bubbles.
The siren exercise covers almost all notes and tones that we usually use while singing. All you have to do is make the sound of an ambulance siren ranging from the west note to the highest.
Trained singers need to drop their jaw a bit lower than they do while talking. So, you have to practice how much you should drop your jaw by putting your thumb between the joint that connects the ears and jawline.
You need to glide your tongue through the chromatic notes of the defined two-octave range while making an “e” sound with your mouth.
Tongue trills are the most difficult exercise out of all these, as some singers find it difficult to perform. It will need you to curl your tongue and roll it in R’s as you will modulate your voice from low to high.
Essential Breathing Exercises
Breathing exercises are vital for singers, given it is not possible to shift from low to high notes without having a grip over the breathing pattern.
In this exercise, all you have to do is control your breathing by holding it for a fixed period. You can start with 10 seconds and then eventually increase it to 60 or 90 seconds. The more you can hold your breath, the stronger will be your command over it while singing.
There are many techniques of hissing breath like counting, modulating, etc. You can take the help of your teacher to understand all the ways of hissing breath exercise. With time, you will be able to control your breath as per your wish!
