About Upasana
I am Upasana Kar, a Hindustani Classical Vocalist and Vocal Coach trained in the esteemed Kotali Gharana tradition pioneered by Sangeetacharya Late Tarapada Chakraborty. My musical journey began under the guidance of Late Pt. Manas Chakraborty, and I continue my advanced taalim under Vidushi Ruchira Panda, one of the foremost torchbearers of the tradition.
With over 16 years of dedicated training and more than 8 years of teaching experience, I have had the privilege of guiding students from diverse age groups and backgrounds through both online and offline lessons. I hold an M.A. in Vocal Music (Khayal) from Rabindra Bharati University and have been recognized with several prestigious achievements, including First Prize in Khayal and the Best Vocalist Award from The Dover Lane Music Conference & Academy. I am also a CCRT Scholar under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and a featured artist on Doordarshan.
As a teacher, I believe that every student has unique strengths and learning needs. My lessons are structured, patient, and personalized, ensuring that students progress with confidence while developing a strong foundation in technique, musical understanding, and artistic expression. My teaching combines the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara with a structured and student-centered approach. With over 16 years of training in Hindustani Classical Music and 8+ years of teaching experience, I work with beginners, intermediate, and advanced learners of all ages.
Classes typically include voice culture, swara training, raag development, bandish learning, improvisation (alaap, bol-alaap, taan), layakari, and guided practice. Each lesson is tailored to the student's goals, pace, and level of experience.
As a teacher of the Kotali Gharana tradition, I place special emphasis on voice production, sur accuracy, raagdari, lyrical interpretation, musical expression, and performance readiness. Students receive individual attention, regular feedback, and structured guidance to ensure steady progress.
Lessons are available online and offline in English, Hindi, and Bengali. Whether you wish to learn for personal enrichment, stage performance, examinations, or professional development, I aim to build a strong classical foundation while nurturing your unique musical identity.
